:x Had my first accident with my GT this afternoon, and I was not off road really.

I've just started with cycling again this year and a mountain bike seemed the way to go. So out this afternoon with my wife and was heading back home when I lost it on some loose gravel and the next second I am ploughing the grass with the side of my face.

Lucky the helmet and peak took a large amount of the impact, not sure how the side of face will look in the morning, ripped the metal lace holder out of one of my shoes, and smashed the right-hand gear indicator also my front brake lever has popped out (but I take it I can refit with some thin nose pliers). The only 'Blood' is from my left knee.

And just some missing paint from items on the handlebars, all seems very light, but still trying to piece together how it happened.

My wife did not see it happen and only pedalled up afterwards with a bit of a laugh, but I was not in a good mood by then. Think I went over the bars.

I rode home and all seems well, frame feels fine and wheels are running true. I am away for a few days now so I will have a full bike check when I get home at the end of the week.

Anyone think what else I should check? And now I have a reason to up-grade a few parts! :D

But glad I had gone seconed-hand with my bike as I am sure I have some more spills to come, so maybe I will leave the upgrading for now.

sounds like a run of the mill spill, juts check the shifters and brakes still work fine but it could give you an excuse to tell the wife you need shiney new things

I had my first fall of the year literally the day after getting my EX8. Was at the end of january when it was still snowy/icy, was heading down a cycle path, went to turn the bend at slow speed (twas icy as heck after all) and literally the next thing I know i'm sliding over the ground on my side still sitting on the bike. It was so iced over it took me a good few seconds to find the grip just to stand up and being 6am it was still pitch black. All day at work I was raging out, expecting to come back to a completely scratched up frame, luckily though the wheel skewers, pedals and grip lock rings took all the friction....

Best part is I did the exact same thing later that week while going under a pedestrian subway, again not a scratch on the paintwork but I was cursing the ice for the rest of the day.
  • :D Face looks OK this morning, just a were aches................must be my age!

Still away for a few days now, back at the end of the week.

Now that's a face - ender. But after all he is from Leeds and he was riding in Philadelphia - bad combination

  • Just back from a few days away, and will be out checking the bike over fully in the morning.

I hope I don't find anymore damage!

But I have had a very stiff neck which came on just after the accident, not sure if it's the different beds I've been sleeping in while I've been away! :?

And my neck is alittle better now I'm sleeping in my bed again.

I had my first crash a short while ago, was on my own.

Going down a pretty rocky bridleway, picking up some speed and then just as I thought 'Hmm, I might be a bit out my dep...' I planted my face on the floor somehow, no idea what happened.

Despite the pain I sprang straight back up to my feet out of sheer embarassment, even though I hadn't seen another soul for hours

I usually find even if I havent seen a soul for hours as soon as I crash the place is crawling with witnesses. Usually there is a kid who points and shouts just in case everybody didnt see
