folks

big decision

cycle to work starts next month cyclescheme

28 mile round trip commute, mixture of tarmac cycle path and road...a few kerbs to negotiate!!
currently do it on a mtb with slicks, can do it in 1 hour

would like something lighter, what kind of bike do i go for????

been in a couple of lbs, they have recommended a marin fairfax or a ridgeback flight

should i buy a road bike or maybe a cyclocross?

help please!!!!!!

I'd go for the road bike, you'll make up a lot of time, even with the kerbs.

Yep. Road bikes are pretty sturdy.

Road bikes are tougher beasts than they look, but if you still arn't sure then look at a cyclo cross bike, you can still do the track stuff but have the aspect of the bike being lighter and on drops.

The time lost in taking the kerbs slower will be made up with the road bikes better speed, best thing I ever did moving from my mtb on slicks to my road bike

Kerbs shouldn't be an issue. There isn't that much difference in the strength between a CX bike and a road bike.

Fatter tyres and different brakes are the main difference. Suggestions:

Advice: At that price (with the way the market is), I'd probably just go for the best groupset. But I wouldn't go for a completely unheard of frame - unless the reviews were reassuring.

Above all else try a bunch before you buy. Two different makes of the same size and groupset can feel completely different to each individual.
