  • I know you say problem now sorted but 256Mb suggests the PC is quite old. 512Mb is still quite low. There may still be room for fruther improvements.

    What make/model?
    Operating system?
    CPU?
Do you know whay type of memory is fitted at present?
Do you know if there are any free memory slots?
There's no such thing as too old.

    Windows slows with age.
Re-install every year or so to keep it running sweet.Cleaners will help a little but not a huge amount.
Is your anti-virus up to date with the latest data base?Try running spybot search and destroy. Its free and is an excellent program.Spyware can cause more slowdown than a corrupt or crouded registry.
As for Windows 7 yes it is the best Windows to date in my opinion.Linux in its many flavours is also great but as Freehub says is not for the novice due to its complexity.
Watch as Apple OS grows then so will the virus attacks....oops whats this????http://buy.norton.com/estore/mf/productDetails/productSkuCode/13509459/priceGroupId/ECOM_MKT_AFFILIATES_ALL_ALL_ALL_ALL_ALL_ALL/ and anti virus for a rock solid OS????

Windows 7 don't slow with age, that's gone since Windows XP.

XP I had hell with, I was re installing every month cause I wanted day 1 performance every day.

Try using CCleaner - it's free and cleans out any temp files and also has a registry cleaner built-in. :D

    Download from here: http://www.ccleaner.com/

I've got 768 Mb of RAM now, DAG. There's still one more slot and the system can take 3 Gig (apparently). 1.6 Ghz processor isn't very fast by today's standards, but it's good enough for what I require. I don't download torrents, or music, or anything else that's memory hungry and don't browse dodgy websites (apart from here  ), so I've not had any problems with viruses or trojans etc

good that its working again, i hate to hear of an injured computer. A couple of things for future refernce

CCleaner is basically a registry cleaner, it can still leave a lot of clutter on the hard drive. To any windows based opearting system creates back up refernce files that you regulary use, it actually creates many copies of them. Th ebest way to clean away allof the stuff you dont need is to right click My Computer (thats your C drive main hard drive) and click disk clean up. If you'v enever done this before you might find yourself getting rid off HUGE amounts of unnecessary data.

To see how much memory your comp has you can a) goto start, right click computer , choose properties and all of teh system info will be there.

A better thing to do is to use a thing called belarc advisor.

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

This gives you a complete analysis of your PC including make of motherboard and memory etc.

    Good luck
