tiagra RD-4500-GS
will this work with a 9speed 11/28 cassette, i have a tigra mech on the rear already but its only a compact chainset with a 26 fitted so i am thinking i have to change the mech and chain as what has come standard will probably be the 4500ss rather than the gs
it stated on shimano site max size as 27 for the gs but also says 27 for the ss so i am thinking this could be a misprint. alternatively the ultegra says it will take a 28 but is £30 more.

the difference ss vs. gs is the capacity, not the maximum cog size on the cassette
capacity is the sum of the differences between the largest/smallest cogs on the cassette, and the largest/smallest chainrings
rd-4500 ss has a capacity of 31t, gs is 37t
examples...
11-27 with 50-34, capacity 32t - use gs
11-28 with 53-39, capacity 31t - use ss
probably be ok with ss on 28 as long as it's within capacitymy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
The SS mech will work fine with a 50/34 and 12/27 and with care in chain length setting will work with an 11/28. This is right on the limit of how much chain it will take up. The B screw adjustment will also need care. The GS will handle the chain take up better but will not take any bigger sprockets.0
