Commuter bike size?

Hi,
This may be a stupid question but i am looking for a commuter bike, I ride a 17inch size med santa cruz chameleon. I have been looking at a few used bikes and they say size medium 20inch!!!!! My question is can you go bigger for a commuter bike or is it best to stay the same as your mtb?

You can... but they all vary. One 20 inch may not be the same as another.

Best to go and sit on the bikes you are considering. Reach is important too..

+1 and with the advent of compact frames the seat tube height is mostly "virtual " so you have to try for size
