Cleaning your bike question

Do many of you have invested in bike stand. When I wash/clean my bike I usually stand it against the curb outside my house, but can be annoying holding onto it with one hand while washing with the other. I am thinking to get one of those stand but wanted to make sure that it is worth it before parting off with my cash. Can anyone recommend a cheap but decent one, can't justify to spend too much on that one to the wife or she will have a fit. :D

i use mine all the time.

I got it from decathlon, i see you are in essex not sure if the Lakeside one is too far from you

    have a look here

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/bike-workstand-53433343/

this is great for washing the bike and doign bits of maintenance. I guess if you want one for just washing the bike you could probably get a cheaper one.

Every sunday after a long ride my bike gets up on one after a hose down.
Both wheels off.... cover it in muc off. Clean.

    Then wipe down.

It is a Feedback pro elite. Not cheap but very solid. Still trying to work out angles though, sure I'm not attaching it quite right! Either tries to tip, or the pedals hit the frame...

Possible getting a carbon frame with an isp soon - not sure what it will make of that!

Thanks for the replies. The Decathlon site does not seem to work correctly for me. Do you have the £29 or £49 one?

  • I think a stand is worth investing in if you are a regular cyclist. I used to perform all my maintenance with my bike upside down making it difficult to make adjustments to the gears etc. With a stand everything is easier.

You could always get the wife to hold the bike up for you whilst you clean it :D

This would be the day. Just bought a Specialized Elite and kept it a couple of days inside and the next morning the bike was by the French doors which meant "take the bloody thing to the shed". :(

It holds the back wheel off the ground for doing gears etc and is ideal for washing the bike down. Only £15.29 from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op Here

Nice one. Will bookmark this and may order one if I can't find anything else. Thanks again!!

Got mine from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. Bit more expensive but really worth it, with height adjust and angle of hold adjust. I use it for storing the bike off the floor in the garage, for washing and for general repairs. They're selling them for £67.97 at the moment.

LOL. My wife tried that once with my Orbea - I said fair enough, put you wedding, engagement and eternity rings on the workbench next to my bike then.

My Orbea lives in the study happily these days :):):)

Best investment ever.....get the best you can afford... I use mine every time.
it seems that everything in the UK is about 60% more expensive than in the US.... they just change the $ sign to the £ sign, [which is 60% more].... I'd do some searching in the US sites and research the shipping.... don't buy too cheap; you want something that has some body [weight] to it so that you feel comfortable adjusting your bike while in the stand...

Thanks for the post, I hear you but unfortunately i don't have a bottomless wallet and I have quite a few things to buy (tools, and some accesories). May get a decent stand from Ebay that I have found. Waiting for the guy to confirm a few things first.

my MTB is a pain as we are renting at the mo and i don't have an area to clean the bikes off so i normally take it to the jet wash and carefully spray that down then lube it up at home.

so far i've been cleaning the road bike off in the kitchen with baby wipes then hovering up afterwards.

what a pain in the ass.

when we buy i\m getting a stand for tinkering/cleaning.

then i'll Fenwicks, wash down, dry, bike luster and lube until the cows come home.
    LOL road riding.

another potential purchase identified by you guys - thanks, wouldn't know what to do with my money without you
  • I was also looking at bike stands and was talking to a collegue at work who suggested using my rear cycle carrier as a stand. Gave this a go yesterday and very happy with the results.By adjusting the support bars to various angles I was able to provide a firm base to hold the bike off of the floor whilst adjusting the gears and turning the pedals. I am going to mount 2 hooks on the wall of the garage to hold the cycle carrier a little higher. Thought this might be of help to someone else as well :D

Could anyone comment on this from Ebay. Thanks

It is reasonably priced and it's free delivery, the feedback from his customers seems ok too

    Thanks

My brother has just got one of these for himself (decided to join me in road riding), and I used it to upgrade his FaustoCoppi. It's a good, solid stand. Stood up to me using a powerbar (the long metal type, not the small, chewy, edible type :D) to remove the seized in bottom bracket. Well worth the money for what it is.
  • Turn it upside down and rest it on the shifters/seat? Solves your problem.

If you're worried about scratching the shifters put a small towel down first.

Some fools deserve to be parted with their money...

Thanks Tony for the heads up. Did not want to pay £40 and then realising that it was a bit crap. For the price this would do nicely.

Use to do that with the old bike, but won't be doing it with the new one
