Front mech sizing?

Wondering if I need to buy a 9-speed specific front mech for by MTB or are all sizes the same as far as front mechs go. I have 9 speed SRAM chain, X9 rear mech and levers but a Shimano LX front mech and the cage on that rubs when on the extreme gears at the rear. Noticed SRAM sell their front mechs as 9 speed or 7/8 speed so is it likely my LX front needs changing to a specific 9 speed or just more fiddling with the adjustments?

What gears are these exactly where it rubs?0

rubs when on small front with smallest rear, and same when on big front and the biggest rear (so not normally gears I'd use). Only middle front is rub-less. Tried adjusting limmits but then the chain won't move onto the big or small front cog when in certain rear gears. So that's what making me wonder if incorect part.0

They generally do rub in those combos - it is not recommended you use them, as you say.
I wouldn't worry if it is only those combos.
8 speed mechs are generally wider than 9 speed, so rubbing can be less, but shifting a bit slower.0
