headsets and bbs

hi all, when buying headsets and bottom brackets, what do i need to know about the rest of the bike before i can decide on what to buy?

i know there are certain standards such as threaded/ unthreaded headsets which i believe depends on the forks. and that shimano have there own type of of bb (octal somthing?) etc.
just thought i would ask to make sure before i buy anything.

headset: diameter of headtube, type of fork
bb:crank type, length of bb tube

thanks guys, also, can i get any type of fork for any type of frame? (getting a dirty jo semi creme which likes 100mm sus, but apart from that, anyhing else i need to know?)

you need to know the diameter of the headtube and the length of the steerer tube. you can measure the steerer tube by measuring the headtube, putting in the headet, measure the stem height and the spacers you want. add all the mesurements together. also if you buy a fork with a longer steerer tube than required it's no problem as you can cut it down but if you buy a fork with a shorther steerer tube than required then basically your screwed

If i recall correctly the Dirty Jo is a standard 1 1/8 inch threadless heatset.

Like jay says, bottom bracket depends on the frame (although i'd hazard a guess that the Jo is 68/73mm) and the type of cranks you use. Howeve, cranks "tend" to come with the BB.

If in doubt, take the frame down your LBS and have a chat with them.
