Assos Bibshort Sizing

OK, I'm going Assos on the bibshorts, but I have a minor (and recurring) dilemma in that my waist, height and chest never seem to match up on the sizing charts:
My height: 184cm / 6' 0" Assos size: L
My waist: 79cm / 31" Assos size: L
My chest: 88cm / 35" Assos size: XS
So yeah, Extra Small or Large?! Seems like a fair old gap to me... My instinct says go with the large as height is the most important factor with bibs and Assos is sized for racing snakes (not that I'm a racing snake, just a skinny fecker!).
Input from fellow skinny feckers appreciated...

Mate - I have read the charts and that's what's confusing me! But yeah, that's what I thoght anyway.
I'm looking at this chart: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Assos-FI-Uno-S5-Bibshorts/ASSOZBBS260. Can you point me to one where it tells you it's all about the height. I guess I just need some comfort as it's a lotta dough..."Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult"0 -
Assos website only give height sizes, and they say this is all you need to know.
Go L.

They should feel a bit tight when stood up, but crouched you'll be cool. Don't go XL as you are slim.0 -
I'm 6' and 32-33" waist & 42" chest. The XL non-bib shorts are about right verging on loose around the waist. The XL S/S jersey is a tad snug and just long enough. The XL bibshorts are fine
Go L in my opinion though you might get away with M.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Go by height NOT waist unless you are really big in the midrift...i'm 6ft and L is best size for me.If you go on waist then the fit wont be right when you are in the riding position, assuming you are not bean pole thin.
Second time i bought a pair was in Condor Cycles in London the skinny guy in th shop asked me 'what size waist have you got ,mine is 32 in and i wear L' ... needless to say i tried XL and L and bought the one that fitted.... so much for lbs knowledge...0 -
I still don't think Assos give enough idea about sizing - especially given how few shops there are that sell their stuff. I hear the height arguement but there's lots of variables in the amount of material needed to be the right length - not least the length of your torso but also the size (depth) of your shoulders. The OP has already indicated he has a pretty small chest. And I know they have their "Pro" sizing cop-out but I have no idea what size a pro is around his waist or thighs or shoulders compared to his height and chest size. It doesn't help that it's generally agreed that Assos come in a size smaller than most people would buy in other products.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

The chest size only applies to jerseys. Not to shorts.
And you can't just go on height for the shorts. I'm 6 feet tall and wear the XL bibs.0 -
The chest size refers to tops only, not shorts..The chart is a bit confusing, don't order shorts based on chest size!!0

Pomtarr,
Take a trip to KB Cycles in Newburn they stock Assos and you can try them on for size

I had the same issue-so tried a pair of large and extra large. As the guys have said above-go for the height measurement, the material is so stretchy that they adapt to your shape easilly. Also remember that (as pointed out above) the shorts are not designed for standing up in-so if they feel restrictive around your shoulders when stood up that is fine, it's when you're on the bike that counts. I'm exactly 184cm as well, and the large are slightly uncomfortable for me when stood up-but perfect on the bike.
Enjoy the shorts-they are great!0 -
I know it's OT but how do you size non-bib shorts? Or, based upon these comments, doesn't it matter - just buy any size? In one of the threads on here it suggests that over-stretched, these shorts become somewhat translucent over time - I'd rather not subject the public to that view. I have some F1 regular shorts in XL but have no idea how they're sized.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0

So it's best to get the right size then, isn't it mate? It's crucial with Assos, always has been.0

Not sure I get the point. With all sportswear it's pretty crucial. But most sportswear companies give you a clue about short sizing over-and-above height, weight and chest size. Most sports companies come pretty close to regular sizings (S, M, L etc) too. As demonstrated by this thread (and others), Assos have people confused. It wouldn't be so bad if you could take a trip to your LBS and slip a pair on. My "LBS" that stocks Assos is in Edinburgh - only 150 miles away. Personally, if you're going to sell a premium brand at premium+ pricing, helping the customer to figure out which product they want would make some sense. I bet that there's more than a few folk that haven't taken the plunge with Assos clothing because they can't figure out what size they need. Assuming Assos are in business to make money, fixing this would be a good step to get there. Unless, of course, their plan is to create some sort of snobbery around their clothing in order to justify the premium+ pricing.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -

It has nothing to do with chest size. The chart is a general one for all shorts and tops. You go with height and also remember that they are not made for fat folk.0 -

Your rant has a lot of merit. Their sizing IS very confusing, but perhaps there is no other way for them to do it? Who knows.
I was on the CHeshire Cat last weekend - and I swear every other person I passed was wearing Assos stuff. So I don't think they are hurting for sales.
But I agree wholeheartedly that they should give some sort of indication based on waist size as well as height. That being said, worst-case scenario: if you order the wrong size, you can return and exchange it for the correct size. And once you know your size, you're set for a while!0 -
I lost over a stone between buying my first pair of assos shorts and the next. I'm still the same size though...0

Except that they're bib shorts and go over your chest, back and shoulders - a big chest will require more material than a skinny chest.
Whatever - as suggested, the only way to know for sure is to try a pair. XL work for me in shorts but obviously some other 6 footers use L. I'm defintely an XL in tops though as much for length as anything.ROAD < Scott Foil HMX Di2, Volagi Liscio Di2, Jamis Renegade Elite Di2, Cube Reaction Race > ROUGH0 -
Maybe we should start an Assos bib library, where you can hire a pair for a week and prance about in them before posting them on to the next crevice customer.
Such a lycra library would benefit those whose nearest dressing up box was too far to make the trip worthwhile.
Chamois cream would have to be banned, and an agreement in place not to use them sans undercrackers. No sweating, and strictly posing only.
We could even sign the bibs, and you could read about which other famous names had caressed their chud cheeks before you. Bib short bliss....0 -

Snobbery value aside, I think you may be right. My point is that above possibly any other cycling clothing manufacturer, with Assos the right size has to be chosen for the race cut of their stuff. The price doesn't concern me personally, because I know they are well designed and made. You get what you pay for. You're not paying for a pair of lycra bib shorts, you're paying for Assos, and that's a different thing.0 -
Thanks for the input everyone, will go L!"Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult"0

They go over your shoulders, not across your chest, nevermind.0
