Gear shifters

Hello I'm building a bike and I was looking at some sram x7shifters will these work with shimano deore fron/rear mech or does everything need to be the same make

Some.

Named shifters work with named mechs ie Deore, alivio and Attack all compatible.

Numbered shifters work with numbered mechs ie X7, SX4.

You can't use a number with a name.

And make sure the cogs match the shifter for amount of gears.

sram Named shifters do. (Attack and rocket) work with shimano rear mechs.

no shimano shifter works with a Sram rear mech.

hmm, this is intersting..
...so i could use a sram x9 rear mech, and x9 shifters with an slx front mech?

This is what I've done on the 456. I've got X-0 shifters and X-0 rear mech, with an SLX front mech. Works really well.
