Energy bars, can I make my own?

In recent weeks i've tried a few different energy bars and I was surprised to find I liked them. What I didn't like was the price. OK relative to my bike & clothing expenditure it's not much but I thought it maybe possible to make my own.

Has anyone tried to make their own energy bars/cakes etc?

If yes can I have the recipe(s)?

  • I don't have a recipe to hand but if you find a flapjack recipe, use honey and mushed-up bananas in the mix and put as much dried fruit in as you dare, you'll have a pretty energy-rich mixture.

The Ainsley Harriott one tastes good.
  • Flapjack man!

    1/3 pack butter
2 large heaped Table spoons of Golden Syrup
Oats (add gradually - the more you add the drier the end result will be, not enough and it'll be overly gooey)
    Chopped nuts and dried fruit
Grated Orange and Lemon Peel (Chopped as fine as you can)
Nutmeg and Cinnamon if you have them

Melt butter and golden syrup together
Stir in solid stuff and spice
Lay half the mixture in a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper smoothed down with butter (use a bit of the butter packet)
Place a layer of jam on top
Sanwich it in with another layer of Oat mixture

Bake for about 15-20 minutes at about 180-200 (check regularly - the sugar burns/colours quickly)

    Leave to cool
    Portion out and clingfilm

Not sure if it's cheaper but it'll be a damned site tastier then energy bars!

  • There's a flapjack-based recipe with apricots and almonds on BR: http://www.bikeradar.com/fitness/nutrit ... ddle-22741

(But I'd use proper butter and honey...)

Remember that to make a proper energy bar, you must use NO natural ingredients whatsoever.

The actual flavour must bear nothing more than a passing resemblance to the flavour stated on the packet (in fact, extra points are awarded if you can make it taste almost entirely unlike the advertised taste),

Consistency-wise, you must aim for a goop rating of at least 90%. The ultimate test of this is whether it can break a man's teeth/jaw/both when chewed on a cold winter's morning.

agreed, they should use them to fill in the numerous potholes that are around at the moment, a permanent repair
