    Lots of info here:
http://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/ worth doing, buy the trail maps, but they are linear maps, so well worth going to the library and getting some proper OS maps as well.
Can be a bit confusing over the Pennines (especially in the thick fog we had!)
Mersey tavern on the banks of the river does a good lunch and a good selection of Whisky!

Some pics of our trip in my sig...

I did it on a road bike fitted with CX tyres. I'd recommend a hardtail with around 100mm forks tho and running on semi slicks. Nothing is very rough, but when you get to the Pennines, it'd have lower gearing than I had, and the suspension will obviously be a tad more comfy.
I stayed in pubs on the ride, but that says a lot about me!

doing the route again this year if you want to come along with us. we are going both ways, so should be leaving southport on the 2nd ish of sept. the route is fine on a hardtail. i would not use a roadbike over the pennines as it can get a bit boggy if the weather turns.
give me a shout if you need any more info regarding camps etc.
