what cycle insurance is needed for touring in france?

are there any companies i should get in touch with?

    CTC, Activcard, Fortis, British Mountaineering Council - depending on how long you're going for.

    I used to find essentialtravel.co.uk decent value one of the few mass market insurers that covered cycle touring.

    You're right, you don't need insurance - at least in the sense of there's no legal requirement to have insurance. But you could argue that insurance is still a good thing to have. I had skipped to the second part of the question and offered some alternative to consider.
