Have to make a decision on what new bike to buy as my second ever by midday tomorrow. It'll be my special / club run / occasional race / sportive bike. I've whittled it down to 3 by an agonising process of elimination. Heart says Cannondale Six Ultegra, head says Scott, combination says Cannondale Six 105 (allowing a bit extra for kit!). Summary below plus the prices I would pay (all 2010 models with 25% off).

Scott CR1 Elite -Sram Rival-Kysrium Elite, weight 7.2kg, £1589

Cannondale Six 105/Aksium, weight 8.32kg, £1349

Cannondale Six Ultegra/Ksyrium Equipe, weight 7.7kg, £1649

Any last minute thoughts before I take the plunge!?

I'd have 2 and try to get the wheels or whatever you fancy upgraded from the start by the shop. Failing that strip the new parts and sell new and upgrade or just buy some decent tyres and then do the rest when needed/wanted.

Frame 2 is the winner, gorgeous. Get it.

well...I can get 25% off with wheelies, so suppose I could get some Fulcrum 3's for £374. Flog the Aksiums for, say £100 (making £274 extra) then I'd have the Black Cannondale with Fulcrum 3's for £1623 - cheaper than the Six Ultegra.

    Zero contest surely?

The black Six is stunning. And stunning bikes are 25% faster than non stunning ones. So the 0.01% performance disadvantage of 105 over Ultegra will be substantially overridden.

Of course your left hand shifter may well snap but who cares!

The only "weak point" to 105 has, IMO, been the "look" of the crankset. But that's a rather lush looking FSA number.

Seriously, why are you still reading!

I think my decision is made. The new Aksiums are 140g lighter than those of old anyway so the only real diff is in 105 vs Ultegra
