gears not shifting

hi novice here!!!!
when i shift up to number 3 on my left shifter, the chain remians on the front middle ring?

any advice?

sorry i dont think i have the correct terminolgy, but i hope you know what i mean!!

    add tension to the cable. adjuster on the shifter.

    If it's quite a new bike or cable, then it's probably stretched a little now and needs adjusting.

    As Nick says, you can adjust it via the tension adjuster on the shifter. You may need to pull some more cable through the mech if you can't adjust it far enough.

    also if its deore, grease the spring in the mech up, as its known for deores to seize up a little, friends did it, remove mech let it soak and get it squeaky clean, then apply grease :)
