Second Hand Bike Buying Advice

Hi there!
I'm new here, so apologies for the stupid newbie question...
I've been riding since the end of last summer when I bought myself my first MTB (a kona hardtail) and I've become properly addicted.
I'm now at the point where I'd like to upgrade my bike and going to a full-susser, but my budget can't stretch to the point where I can afford to go buy a brand new bike and I don't want to buy on credit (have too many other commitments to also finance a monthly bike loan!!).
Anyway, my question is, does anyone have any advice on buying second hand? Obviously when buying new you get the chance to take different bikes out for a spin to see which one you like - is it worth still doing that and then once I've found the bikes I like, go looking for the second hand ones??
Cheers, Atomic.

Do you really need FS. I have FS at the moment but am going back to a hardtail to improve my riding.
Get a good fork and the bike is much better.
Kona hardtails can take a beasting so you don't need to be worried about breaking it0 -
I'm not sure it was the bike that I was worried about - I think I'm after a bit more comfort.
I usually ride with a bunch of guys, most of which ride FS and I've noticed that they seem to be able to pedal through sections where I'm still hanging on to the bouncing buck-a-roo!
(although that's probably just my lack of ability )0
