Hi,

Looking for a new xc/trails bike for riding general cross country/singletrack/all mountain.

I would prefer a full suspension 4 or 5 inches travel so any suggestions you have would be good, Ideally it would have air shocks front and rear and a decent frame,

I am also willing to buy secondhand but would like to see the bike first so if anyone around the somerset, bath, bristol area is selling a similar bike i am very interested.

Thanks

    F and F,

Just been through this dilema myself - my selection boiled down to

    Trek fuel ex 5.5 2009 (£799)
    Giant Trance X5 (£999)
    Specialised FSR XC £1050)
    Norco Faze 3 (£900)
    Felt Compulsion 3 (£999)

I settled on the Trek which I must say is an absolutely gorgeous ride.... although the fork will need upgrading soon.

They've all got rear air shocks, they've all got about 120mm travel (the Felt was a bit more)

All of them are well worth £1000.
  • Cheers for that, will look into them

Care to mention where you saw the trek for 799?

This won a rave review in last months What Mountain bike...

    the KHS 604

    http://www.khsbikes.co.uk/bikes#XC604

    Great spec for £850

" Probably the best suspension bike under £1,000, this is a brilliantly designed and superbly controlled machine that feels equally at home on steady climbs, rocky descents and high speed singletrack. "
Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

I saw that review, but if I'm honest, I've not heard much about KHS and thats the only review I've seen. Mail order only as well, if getting a rid round halfords on a boardman is hard enough, a rid on one of these is virtually inpossible.

Or step up to the Boardman Team
    MTB/CX

"As I said last time, it won't happen again."
  • For something a little longer in the fork.

    GT Aggressor Elite from Halfords.

5" travel and a better spec than anything mentioned above (apart from maybe the boardman team mentioned by Bails).

Or for an extra £100 the Orange Crush.

Not sure what size you are but there are bargains to be had if you take a new 2008 or 2009 model...a bargain in my eyes and I have raved about the quality and spec is the Mongoose Teocali Super....if you can get away with a medium/small http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... 1b2s1p1505 full xt...brakes, chainset and hubs, fox rp23, Marzocchi XC600 ETA 140mm, easton finishing kit...a great buy....second hand a Trek EX8 or a Marin Mount Vision 5.8 are easily within reach....at a push you should get an Orange 5...my choice would be the Marin the build quality and susspension system is second to none.
Tomac Synper 140 Giant XTC Alliance 1
If the world was flat, I wouldn't be riding !
