Can someone tell me how many links are in a chain for a ten speed shimano set up with 52 front and 23 rear and 39 front and 12 rear I got a kmc 10 speed chain when I've got the bike on the small ring on the fronat and the smallest ring on the cassette the chain is so slack it lays on the rear stay and droops down below. I want to know how many links to take out????? Help please

    A. You ain't supposed to ride it like that! Change to the bigger (52) front ring, then find a suitable sproket at the rear.
    B. Follow this link
    Sheldon Brown is your friend.
About half way down that page, you'll see a bit about chain length. Follow those instructions, you wont go far wrong.

which rear mech? you should check the manufacturer's instructions for correct chain length

generally you set chain length so that the axles of the two jockey wheels are vertically in line when the chain is on the biggest chainring and smallest sprocket

Chain length will also depend on chainstay length.

Park Tools also have a guide. There seem to be a whole range of different ways of calculating this.

I particularly like the idea of doing it this way
    Chain length = 1 + 0.25 * (F + R) + 2 * √[C2 + {0.0796 * (F – R)}2]
    :?
