New Bike or New Wheels?

Hello all,

So I currently have 3 bikes in my collection, HardTail MTB, FullSuspension MTB and my 'roadie' which i'll come to shortly. I've also recently moved to Hampshire/Surrey so I'm still discovering the roads and trails around this area.

A couple of years ago I built my 'roadie' for a cycle tour across Europe, now I am finding that I cycle it more than my MTBs, primarily as it is a better fitness tool, I can use it straight out my front door (no driving to the local forest/hill) and I cycle it to work.

The 'roadie' is a voodoo wazoo cyclocross frame (reynolds 853) with vicious cycles touring forks, its nicely kitted out with mudguards, racks, drops with v-brakes and bar end shifters, currently running a compact chainset with MTB cassette. Wheels are 36 hole touring rims on MTB hubs (xtr/xt).

Altogether its a versatile bike, I can ride it on the road, unpaved tow-paths with or without luggage, summer or winter, rain or shine. But I have been considering a few upgrades, primarily some lighter road wheels with 23c road tyres to add some pace to my fitness rides.

However my work offers Cycle to Work scheme, so I'm trying to decide if I should spend my money on an admittedly budget set of road wheels, good tyres, road cassette etc. Or should I take advantage of the C2C scheme and add a boardman team edition road bike to my collection? (My works scheme is through halfords)

So essentially what I'm asking is do you think I would notice a big difference between my upgraded light tourer and a full road bike?

    Someone once said on a bike forum "You should never not by a new bike" Makes sense to me.

    It sounds loike you're trying to turn a bike that is one thing into a bike that is another. I did this once and it was a money pit.

    C2W = new bike for a little over half-price. No brainer. 8)
    Worst case scenario, you buy the Boardman Team & sell it after twelve months for what you've paid for it. :wink:
