Best wheels sub £200

I'm looking at getting some new wheels after my Fulcrum 5 hub basically fell apart, and now makes a very unnerving sound, along with that the rim has gone out of shape quite severely on the rear wheel after just 15 months use!

Anyway...

The two main contenders I have found at around the £150 mark are some Shimano RS30s and Mavic Aksiums. They both appear at the same price point and are around the same weight. Are there any particular points that should push me towards one or the other? Or at this level is it more a case of aesthetics when choosing which wheel.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thnaks

The Model Bs are half your budget and probably just as good as Aksiums or the RS30s quite honestly. You'd be quids in ...

they look a bit boring though, no decals or anything, swinging towards the aksiums to be honest - but not hearing much about the RS30s, anyone got an opinion on those?

They look a bit boring? You should have asked for "Prettiest wheels under £200"

The RS30s are 300g heavier, more expensive, and if the spokes break you'll be stuffed, but it's your money.

Had both. Apart from one being louder than the other, can't tell any difference. Aksiums look better though.
  • +1 for Planet X model B's.
Had Fulcrum 7's and Aksiums and I would rate the model B's as every bit as good, but even cheaper!

Couldn't agree more, Model B's are great, i'm yet to find anything that beats them under £200

Never mind how pretty they do or do not look, the performance and vfm is what counts here, besides it's only a few shiny stickers the others have ...

When people buy cars, it isn't purely a choice of function over aesthetics, if you don't like the way the car looks your not going to buy it, regardless of whether it is the fastest and cheapest.

Maybe all the clothes you wear are plain with no labels, and you only buy generic stuff from Asda or Primark that costs £5 simply because it does the same job as other brands, but when I buy things I take other factors than function into account.

From what I'm hearing the difference between the wheels is marginal, so I'm going to get the Aksiums because for me they are more aesthetically pleasing and seem to be well received in terms of performance. Apologies that my decision is based on more than just weight and function.

You're opinion and comment was really helpful though, and I hope it fulfilled you as a person.

I removed the stickers from my aksiums, because of their uglyness. Top wheels though, wouldn't ride anything else for training.

+4 for the Planet X Model B wheels. Had mine as winter/commuter wheels for over a year now, they are still straight and true. Fantastic value.
