Best lightweight touring lock?

Am looking for suggestions for a lightweight lock that can serve as a temporary deterrent to bike thieves when I make a lunch or sightseeing stop on a tour. I will have a separate D lock in my luggage for locking the bikes up when we stop overnight, so I am really looking for something portable and light that can either be fitted to the bike or stored in a bar bag.

Here are the best solutions that I could find, both by Abus, both very different in terms of their portability and security. The Combiflex 202 (90cm) weighs in at 90g and looks like a clamshell mobile phone but would not stand up against decent clippers. The Bordo Combo 6100, (also 90cm), weighs in at 1,160g, but has Level 8 protection.
  • I can lend you my Doberman it will run alongside you happily all day, it weighs about 30kg but it carries itself so very lightweight for you. Just feed it water it and chain it to the bike when required.

I would be tempted to reccy a LBS on google for anywhere you are visiting and ask if they will look after your bike for a few hours for payment. I Then again I am completely paranoid about leaving my bikes in public

  • How about one of these from Millets?

It doesn't show it with a lock, but it does come with a little combination one. Not the strongest of locks, but it's nice and long, you should be able to get it round wheels or maybe panniers?
  • I'm sure it is possible to get something which, while not the strongest, does have an audible alarm attached. Could be just the job.

light = poor security so its a trade-off really. I have an old one that is like a tape measure with an extending 2-3mm steel cable that locks to itself. It will stop somebody simply walking off with your bike (just about) but wouldnt stand up to any kind of attack with tools. Its pretty easy to tuck in a saddlebag though so if I ever ride anywhere I need to leave the bike for a max of 5 mins it will give me slightly more confidence....

just found it here on a US site but mine was from Aldi/Lidl for about £3...

I'm a bit puzzled as to why you would need two locks, one for short stops, one for long - surely it is lightest of all just to have one decent lock?

But if you do want a light-ish lock, then the Kryptonite Evo Mini is under a kilo and is very secure - its easy to carry in a back pocket, like many bike messengers do. Abus do a version of the Futura which is about 700 g, it saves weight by having a very slim shackle - it still provides very good protection.

If you are looking for a light cable type lock, I'd suggest that on tour a slim Kryptonite cable, along with a strong padlock would be light, have multiple uses (the cable is great for swatting away dogs!) and more secure than most purpose build cable locks.
