For you guys who wish to buy or own an edge 605/705
You may well be aware of the high price of purchasing the GB TOPO map software from garmin which is currently at around £130ish.
Fear not my friends for you can download a free map from the following link which is open source (freely available). this map is more detailed than the GB TOPO.
i have used this on my garmin with excellent results, you get all road names, poi's etc;
hear is the link......

i took out the microsd, put it in a card reader, removed the original map file for safe keeping and replaced it with one of andyg/maps.
Happy riding guys......':D'

God damn it,
Ive just ordered TOPO a couple of minutes ago.
Cheers for the link anyway. Take it you just shove the file on a SD card and plug it into the 705? Im a bit new to this lark like.

The links are to Open Street Map data files which is indeed Open Source. However the quality of the mapping is quite variable because it is 'crowd-sourced' - it might be better quality in your area, but it definitely isn't in mine!
Having said that I'd hold off buying any mapping product at the moment, because there are plans to make a number of Ordnance Survey digital map products free including both 1:50k and 1:25k maps.0 -
Sorry Fenski but when you say quality do you mean accuracy of the area or just not neat as in readable enough??
If it's the accuracy you are concerned about then maybe there aren't enough good 'trackers' out there to put in enough detail for your area, i have found several paths/trails not marked and edited them into open street map myself with clarity on accuracy being paramount for it is also for the use of others not just myself.
You are right about the plans to make certain digital mapping free which if i'm not mistaken is being pushed for april.
Furthermore any mapping product wether paper or digital is subject to ommisions, mistakes and even added info that isn't there, none of them are 100% accurate and never will be.2001 Cove Stiffee FR

Yes thats correct, but don't forget that you have to 'unzip' the file first before putting it onto the card.2001 Cove Stiffee FR

When I say quality I mean accuracy (both location and attribute) and completeness. In less densely populated areas, this is inevitably going to be an issue. I did start updating the data based on GPS tracks I had recorded when out on my bike, but as my day job is mapping it very quickly became too much like work... quite literally:))
Open Street Map has it's place - however as it's crowd-sourced, like WIkipedia, there are reliability issues.0 -

Maybe your 'reliability' issues with openstreet map will be forgotten if they have the go ahead to host the free OSmapping due out from april 1st.
Have a read of this..........

This of course will be a bonus to all us garmin users, as we are already aware of the little detail provided by MAPSOURCE......2001 Cove Stiffee FR

I don't think there would be any point in Open Street Map simply hosting the OS data as it will be available via OS OpenSpace (as it is already ). It would also be difficult to 'incorporate' the OS data into OSM from a technical point of view because of fundamental differences between OSM and the OS data that will be free (vector vs raster etc).
However the OS data could be used as a base map for digitising features within OSM or for (arguably much needed) verification purposes.
It's also worth noting that the Ordance Survey don't really have many vector products (the type of data required for uses like routing) to speak of in the scale range being suggested - 1:25k to 1:50k.0
