Chain not shifting onto inner ring properly

Hi,

Following a bike rebuild and new chain, I'm finding that the chain will occasionally skip over or balance on the edge of the inner ring of my double chain ring. The dérailleur alignment seems ok, so I suspect it may be the chain length. Could the chain be too long?

  • It happens when you use a 10 speed chain with 8 or 9 speed chain rings. I think that because the chain is very slightly narrower the ramps and pins on the chain ring are slightly wider to make sure the chain drops on to the middle/smallest ring correctly.

Might not be that mind, mine did the same at it was using all 8 speed equipment. Did it once or twice and then never again so didn't worry about it.

  • I'm running a 10 speed set up with double chain ring. Checking my LBS receipt, the chain is listed as "SHIMANO CN-7800 Dur". I believe this is the 10 speed chain?
  • What chainset are you using?

I don't think I've been clear in my original post. It's the inner ring of the chainset that the chain occasionally misses. It's a Dura-ace 53/39 double.

Incorrect chain length will make no difference. It would affect other things long before the chain rings. Which way is it missing the ring. Overshooting and landing on the BB or riding on top of the teeth. Either way it sounds like a low limit screw problem.
