P*ncture every 170 miles on average. Normal?

Hi There,

I've been enjoying my first MTB. I have done 1200 miles and am getting a p*ncture every 170 miles on average. Would you say this is the "normal" rate? I just need some indication as I realise it will vary a bit with terrain etc... Do some people ride 1,000s of miles and get none for example as I do on my errr.... roadie.

I ride on flinty trails in the chilterns and roads. The tyres the bike came with are Continental Mountain King 2.2. tyres which seem prone to flint cuts. If this is higher than the average rate any suggestions as to something more durable? I'm not so fussed about speed but seem be forever blowing bubbles!

Cheers

J

i've had one puncture in about 6 months of regular riding. continental mountain kings aren't known as particurly strong tyres

It doesn't sound like an awful rate. Have you considered going tubeless (or different tyres)?

Try DH tubesa and better tyres.

If you really don't care about weight then get some dual ply tyres but they weigh over a kilo each

It does seem like quite a rate though. I ride rocky trails regularly but havn't had a puncture for about 8 months (admitaly not sharp flint though)

wait what? 1200 miles total, every 170 miles, so what 7 punctures.

ok so what is causing the punctures? are the tyres cut up from the flint where you ride or is it from thorns, or even pinch flats?

stronger tyres will help with all 3, but not necessarily dual ply ones though, something more robust though. now if it's pinch flats try more pressure in the tyres, or go tubeless.

if the tyres are cut badly then perhaps something with reinforced sidewalls would be more suitable.

if it's thorns etc, then yeah downhill tubes will help.

although seven punctures doesn't seem all that bad to me, yeah granted not great but some people here have had that in only a few days riding.

personally i use a couple of single ply maxxis tyres and specialised tubes (i don't think they are DH tubes but they seem pretty thick and good quality) and run pressures of around 35 PSI in a 2.35 high roller. think i've only had one puncture in the last year, but then i'm not riding in a slatey area.

anyway i hope you solve your issue soon.
    Fancy a brew?

    Thanks for the replies!

The tyres do seem to cut up a bit although I'm not sure that is the problem. The punctures all seem to be caused by very very small (2mm diameter) sharp flints - outwash I guess - which burrow into the tyre. But these are very hard to spot before they do their damage as the tyre will be covered with mud and flint. It's not easy for me to wash down the tyres every time so I'm not sure how I can stop the feckers. It will be easier in summer when the conditions are not so filthy!

If my puncture rate isn't that bad I might persevere for a bit longer, particularly considering the cost of some nice new tyres at say £60 for two. I've got to be honest I'm not sure what going tubeless is all about (although one of my mates at work did talk about it) so I'll do some research in that area and perhaps pop down the LBS.

Off to fix my latest puncture and these tyres have at least one more innings!

    Cheers!

Only one per 170 miles, I probably get ten times that with the thorns around here. I use sealent filled tubes and have to pull the thorns out and patch them up from time to time, it is like having a iside out hedgehog in the tire.

    Hi guys

I've been riding MTB for just short of 2 years, started with a Giant Rainier and Kenda tyres (unnamed, just what came with bike). After a serious crash which punctured my lung and enforced 2 months off the bike, I changed the tyres for Panaracer Fire XC, 26 x 2.1. Even with the crash and quite a lot of riding since I've (touchwood) never had a puncture yet. I rode with 35PSI but having changed to full suss Marin Mount Vision, and Fox F80 RLT, round Moray trails, now ride with 40 PSI, and still no punctures to date.

No doubt as a result of mu boasting that will change.

    cheers

That would be an OEM navegal hitting mud? :o You need more than n00b skills to master such hard tyres on slippery ground. I got a groin strain and clicking jaw  Oh and they punctured lots too. Have I mentioned how much I hate thorns?

I'd be happy with one every 170 miles!

Between 3 of us doing the Borrowdale Bash we accquired 6 punctures in the first 6 miles! % of which were pinch punctures!

One every 170 miles or so seems pretty good to me, especially on sharp flint...

I`ve had two today. One while the bike was in the stand and I was cleaning the chain.
