I know this is nothing to do with cycling, but i'm sure a fair few of you hardened souls are open to other challenges not just ones on wheels!
I have set up a website http://www.dont-eat-day.comto raise money for Action Against Hunger UK.
The challenge is a 24hr fast being observed on 22nd August 2010 and I want to get as many people to join me as possible!
Most challenges involve doing something, this one involves not doing something; so is really more of a mental challenge than physical.
Please, please, take a look at the site and consider joining
Thanks, Mark

I've done it in the past and it was fairly tough metally especially if anyone is eating around you or you smell cooking. Physically I guess it depends on how active you are, most of my time was spent sitting on a bus or generally lazing around so it wasn't too bad. A couple of tips:-
1. If the 24 hour period isn't defined try having breakfast on the day you start it at 7.00ish or whenever as then you have food in your body for the most active part of your day (assuming you aren't a night worker!).
2. Don't celebrate at the end with a few drinks, you will feel rough the next day :oops:0 -

Having said that, there's no scoffing up in the evening, just eating what is strictly necessary (as I understand it)0 -
Yep, makes Ramadan tougher at different times of year as the time of abstinence increases.0

i was speaking to a muzzie about this and he said he put on weight during ramadam as he ate so much in the evening.0

apparently, the majority of religions fasting allows some foods and water at particular times of the day (mostly night...)Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

I go without food for 24 hours quite regularly. Beer doesn't count as food, right?
Never have anything before lunch, and often go straight to play football (or the pub) after work without eating. That means not getting home till nine, and by the time I'm showered and stuff I can't be bothered with food, so my next meal is lunch the next day.
I know it doesn't sound healthy, but I honestly don't feel desperately hungry during that time. Not sure how I manage it to be perfectly honest, although a mere 4 mile commute probably helps.0 -

Do you have the giant taco salad for lunch?

I think, like all things, it varies between individuals and cultures.
Had a Malaysian flatmate who considered himself quite religious, and he was keen to only eat what was strictly necessary in the night during Ramadan.
Islam isn't one homogenous faith anyway, where everyone does exactly the same thing, not by a long shot.0 -
I worked on ships with Malaysian and Arabs.
They fasted during the day, drinking water if necessary, then had a scoff whem the sun went down. This was because Allah could not see them eating, hence eating in a room without windows.
They did put weight on during ramadan due to the amount eaten of an evening.
There are dispensatons, depending on how religious, if working or travelling, where they can eat if hungry
We worked in ambient air temps of 50C and 90% humidity for 12 hours a day, so the boys did eat and drink, the guys that never dropped like flys.
The mega eating party at the end of it was a bun fight, we got an invite to that, some amazing party foods0
