Help please compressing a photo

Tried to change my avatar the other day but can't get my picture below the required size. I've tried compressing it as a jpg and a gif. I got the gif down to the right size but it was only 4 colours and looked a bit silly! Is there any decent online compression software that I can use? Thanks

    Are you sure your avatar is a suitable size? First try resizing it to 80 x 80 pixels.

    irfanview is a very small very good free one.

    if you want equally cost effective but far bigger photoshop clones you could try Paint.net or The Gimp (great but terribly slow)
