Will this work on an 8 speed cassette? I realise that I'll have to adjust the limits on the rear mech but dont know whether the increment per shift will be too much for an 8 speed cassette.
Reason being I want to get a set of RS10/20 for the good bike and put the R500s onto the slightly not so good bike and I cant seem to find a 7 speed cassette for the 500s.
Couldn't use the current cassette in any case as it's an old screw on type.

the spacing between the cogs is the same, so just chose which 7 of the 8 cogs you want to use."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

although you will need a spacer since a 7 speed cassette is narrower in total than a 8/9/10 speed one (which is what the freehub on your wheels is designed for.)

in fact you have raised another issue.
your new wheel hubs will be wider that the old ones.
not by much.just 4mm but depending on the frame material you may need to set the rear end to take the new wheels.
have a read of the spacing topic
