100 million to repair potholes?

Am sure many are aware of Darling's budget a few days ago. But am left wondering why I pay my council tax, which has gone up again (now £1900 a year) and what road tax is used for?

Today I went for a ride, and must have done an extra mile riding round them. I still hit a couple, which were unavoidable due to traffic. But I reckon we need a 100 million just to repair the roads in sunny Leics? Nevermind the rest of the country!

The UK has overspent over the last 20 years and now we are in debt with little of substance to pay it back with.

Be prepared for a long and slow decline in prosperity :(

You don't pay road tax you ought to know that from this forum by now

To be fair, my Council were out as soon as the snow cleared patching potholes althoughfrom a professional point of view I reckon they are doing a short term fix and not doing them properly. However, the further bad weather has brought more around. Lack of investment in the roads over decades has sown the seeds and the cold winter has produced the crop of potholes and they won't get fixed anytime soon unless they become officially rated as "dangerous".

go out at 3am with a hammer to make them more dangerous. wear dark clothing and snoop around in a suspicious manner.

what are the rules on people filling them in themselves? there is a reall yannoying one outside my house.

+1 around here - loads of holes with a bit of tar thrown in, and not even rolled flat, left proud for every tyre to bounce over - give it a few weeks and they'll all be worse than ever

I would say most potholes are dangerous? Maybe not for cars and alike, but for cyclists and motorbikes?

I think someone should pay a load of "travellers" to repair the roads? Half the price of the local authority? they love tarmac'ing? (and there pretty good a snooping around at 3am in a suspicious manner: should you want them to make the potholes more dangerous, giving them reason to fill them in?

Most potholes are definately dangerous but a Highway Authority can get away without fixing them until they are made aware of their existence as they can otherwise claim that there was no pothole when they last carried out a routine inspection. I think they also have a size at which they will act immediately.

I think that one goes down as routine maintenance around Cardiff judging by my new route to work which I intend cycling from next week
