If you fancy a bodge then realistically any magnet will do - eg from a cheapo computer etc.
For something neater this should work fine and its not going to break the bank if it doesnt:

buy a small rare earth magnet on ebay and stick it on your pedal spindle, miles neater than the garmin method,0

That should fit, needs to go in the end of the crank-arm where the end of the thread of the pedal spindle comes through, so 10mm is plenty small enough. Need to watch how close the cadence pick-up needs to be, can mean you have the pick-up slanted over from the chain-stay by quite a bit to get near enough to the magnet.Jens says "Shut up legs !! "

nah, rare earth magnets are super powerfull so they dont have to be as close as you'd think. I had a right job removing one from the front of our fridge!0

glueing a magnet to the crank is best, use silicone sealant or araldite, as long as the crank surface is prepared well it should last for years
otherwise, assuming you have a garmin spoke magnet on the wheel...
get a cateye spoke magnet (much cheaper than garmin)
take off germin spoke magnet, the plastic bit has notches that nylon ties fit into, attach it to crank with two bylon ties
put cateye magnet on spokemy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
I use a 12mm x 2mm rare earth magnet. Works perfectly. Magnet is about 10mm away from sensor.
Still got 8 spares but doubt I will ever lose one. There's no such thing as too old.0
