Best route from Gretna to Carlisle

There used to be a cycle route for the Gretna to Carlisle section of the JOGLE, but now the A74 has become the M6, I believe the cycle path has expired.

An alternative looks like taking the A6071 to Longtown, then south on the A7.

Or is there a better way?

I believe they built a new road alongside when they upgraded the A74 to the M6, for non-motorway traffic.

Edit - yep, Google maps shows a minor road alongside the new stretch of M6.

... However, the road does not show up on Google images. Then I used GoogleEarth which has streetview snapshots of the new road. I believe it now :)

The new road is much, much nicer than the trip up to Longtown on the A7 then across. Its new, super-smooth tarmac much of the way :)
    More problems but still living....

    This road

You cross the river on the side of the M74, seen on streetview here

There is a new service road which runs along M74, follow route from Carlisle to Rockcliffe and then follow signs for Gretna.
  • The new road isn't signed for Carlisle at Gretna (or for Gretna at Carlisle). Turn first right after the Gretna Chase Hotel, at the first junction turn left then first right. Carlisle is signed after that.
