But of somone wants to spend money on teir bike, why put them off doing it?

I made some changes to my bike that will have NO impact on how it handles (Zipp Stem/Bars, Thomson seatpost etc) i bought them as I felt like it, and they looked nice.

I have a hobby I enjoy, I like spending money on my bike, it is spare money I have knocking about, and for me is part of the enjoyment I get out of it.

Will spending money on wheels make OP alot faster, in short, no.

Will spending money on wheels make OP want to ride more, and get the most out of them...

If you have it spare, spend it...

Campag Neutrons at about £450. Light and bombproof. For some reason they get overlooked in reviews, perhaps because they have been around for a long time.

Hasn't anybody bothered to read the original question..?

The OP wants lighter wheels to get him up hills quicker. It won't happen.
  • So its settled then, spend lots of money but not on good wheels because they make you poncey.

I've got some wheels in the shed for £1500 pm me. :D

But ighter wheels may give him the mental edge.

Since getting mine my times have decreased for my two local short (25 miles-ish) training rides, these contain alot of hills as they are between Horbury and Huddersfield. This may just be a placebo effect, but it has cut my time down by nearly 10%...

I too am faster uphill on lighter wheels.
  • Thanks to everyone for their advice. I have to say, I'm glad we didn't have this discussion down the pub as I'm pretty sure a couple of you would be doing a stretch away from your friends and family.
After some more careful consideration I think I'm gonna opt for the DA 7850 CL's. They seem to tick all the right boxes without being obscenely expensive.

ironically, the only one throwing insults on this thread is a plod..... ;)

The DAs are good wheels - whether they will do what you are hoping them to remains to be seen.....

Yet ironically, I find the term 'plod' an insult...

In which case, you are very easily insulted. 'PC Plod' was the lovable cartoon policeman from Enid Blyton's 'Noddy' books - what's not to like..?

    Fair enough.

Just finished reading some of the Noddy books to my daughter and PC Plod was not the loveable local bobby - he was an insufferable dipstick always telling Noddy and other free spirits off.

Anyway, I have the DA wheels, they are really nice and good value for the money. Not sure if I go up hills any faster, but then I was never going to go up the hill particularly quickly anyway.

Sorry NapoleonD - that came out really bad - I was answering Soflad's note and yours came out in the interim. Did make it funnier though !!

    +1 get the wheels

anything to add motivation can only be good.

my bike was noisy recently and felt terrible. I just didnt want to ride it. i was destroying the tranquility of the countryside. awful.

bit of a clean. bit of lube. new small chainring. new bar tape and I love it. silence and i stangely feel more 'connected' to the bike coz the noise gives an impression of power loss.

    result = more riding. :D
That`s more of a reason to maintain your bike properly than to buy expensive wheels. :)

find myself agreeing with NapD, some times new kit can give you an incentive to do all that logical stuff.

I've got the dura Ace and they do make a difference up hills - especially if you're mooting Alps. I dont sense theyre uber-durable though. I'm 82KG /6'2" not sure I'd fancy them if I was a couple of stone heavier.

I've also had a pair of Ksyrium since they were first introduced (before SLs, Elites etc). Probably 8/9 years old - 10K miles. Still in good nick and light. I'd get the top Ksyriums - whatever they're called now. Wouldn't dick about with the elites - not enough of a leap over what you've got.

If it absolutely has to bomb on the flats at 20mph+ you can't beat a pair of cosmic carbones though!.....
....which is of course irrelevant to your post

    I like wheels :D

p.s. Didn't Enid Blyton's characters included numerous dubious racial stereotypes in addition to the aforementioned constable?

I'm definitely faster up hills on lighter wheels. Off road anyway, can't see why on road would be different.

If light wheels and a light bike and things generally being better quality isn't a help why aren't all the people telling the OP not to buy new wheels riding Apollo MTBs or Asda specials?
  • +1 for fulcrums

Got myself a pair of fulcrum 1's for Xmas and don't care whether it was phycological or not they've made me quicker. £450 from merlin cycles... bargain.
