Really stiff clincher racing wheels.

I want some really stiff bombproof racing wheels of a reasonably light weight...

The ones that I think fit the bill best are Mavic Ksyrium SLs.

I have also thought about hand builts from Derek, The Dura Ace carbon clincher wheels I used to have and Easton EA90 SLXs.

They are to use on my Cervelo for chain gangs and as spares for when my Zipps punckcher in a race. Also on the Litespeed for when I feel like it!

Any thoughts?

I've had the Eastons, still have Mavic Ksyriums SL Premiums, but last year replaced my R-Sys's with a set of HED Ardennes.

I would not recommend the Easton's at all, I have had loads of issues with them going out of true, and they have to be re-trued at Easton as they reckon to use a stethoscope to get the even and high spoke tension they seem to rely on (I have knowledge of two other users who have suffered from similar results)

The Ksyrums are great, they look good (the main issue), and absolutely bombproof and have not been touched despite many thousand miles on them.

The HED Ardennes are lighter and a lot more aero than the Kysriums, and in general are the wheel I prefer to ride, they are stiff, hold speed better than the SL's (but don't look as flash). I had a spate of cuts in the side-walls of Conti GP4000S tyres on the wider rims of the Ardennes, but since going to Pro-Race 3's I not had a repeat of this
    Complicating matters since 1965

Mavic Ksyrium SLs are very good wheels, light and plenty stiff, I still have mine and although I don't race them, they have had plenty of hard use, never been out of true - highly recommended.

DA or record hubs 32 hole. Laced with DT Revolution spokes to Mavic Reflex rims with Conti Sprinter tires. Maybe alloy nipples.

Shamal Ultra. With or without the 2-way.

Bombproof, light(ish), aero(ish), cheap(ish) and lovely to look at.

Oooohh! i've a pair of 32hole DA 7700 hubs in the house that i've asked Derek at wheelsmith for an idea for cost and spec for a rebuild... recommedation was Sipam CX-ray / alloy nipples and IRC Cadence..

the cst for a rebuild was £285 ... which could be good value for money as a pair of strong clincher general purpose wheels

I have some good sturdy hand builts anyhoo!

Think I'm going to go with the Ksyriums...

They won't be specifically for racing, the Zipps are for that but your description pretty much seals it...

I'm keeping my Easton EA90SLX's as back up to the Zipps.
But, the IRD Cadence built on my powertap are excellent wheels, if a tad heavier...

Seeing you are Scotland based have you asked Steve in the wheelroom.
I would also stay away from alloy nipples myself, never found a good builder who likes them.

NapoleonD, I can highly recommend the Cadence aero rims for bombproofness.

    Heh heh, no worries!

If I was going tubs they'd be Ambrosio nemesis rims...
  • Just picked up my new bike with Ksyrium SLs so can't give you a long term picture of reliability, but covered about 100 miles on them so far and they are very confidence inspiring, with no noticeable flex - I'm 6'4" and getting on for 15st ;)

    Yes.

And to have something that I can thrash. Wouldn't have used the DA wheels in winter, sh1tty weather. Got a good deal on the SLs, and I'm pretty sure the SLs will be stiffer...

I would have got the DAs though if they had been in stock at my LBS as they had to order the SLs in. But they would have had to order those in and it would have taken longer. When I want something I want it NOW!

Where you shop at your LBS for almost everything and they look after you, that's a good deal ;)

Similar price to the DA wheels...

I've just ordered some Vittoria Open Corsas and a Force cassette to go with them too...

Did you go for the black or black/red? The black/red are sweet, put them on my new bike.

Is this the same NapD that recommends Wheelsmith.co.uk on every other "what wheel thread".Then goes out and buys Mavic SL`s.I suppose you have a logical explanation for this then el capitano.

Yes. I need them now, Derek has quite a backlog... :C (Partly my own fault too!)

Otherwise I would have got IRD Rims, Choon hubs and black CX Ray spokes...

they would make a great wheel set. apperently the cadence aero are from the same extrusion die as dt swiss 1.2 rims, but lighter being made of niobium alloy.strong aero and relatively light. whats the price tag on a set like that?
