Hi all,

So i went out for about 1 mile. the first couple of stops when ok, got out the pedals and into them on the restart easy(thinking to myself whats all the fuss about.................) then just as that thought leaves my head over i go. hahahaha was so funny. Couldnt stop laughting. lucky it was on a cycle path and no traffic. it must have been about 2 mins into my first ever ride on a road bike. gott a be a record? any one beat that ????

First ever ride on road bike.
Started at the bottom of my drive.
Clipped left foot in. Pushed off. Couldn't get right foot in and fell to the right.
Put right foot down to stop fallage.
Cleat slipped on the tarmac and I did the splits in the middle of the road.
Just as the woman who lived opposite me who I fancied came round the corner in her new car.
  • Hmmm, yeah the record is yours, anyone else?

Yeah, I didn't get outside the house. Had a few scoots around the living room and put my hand through a glass door. Currently recovering from the slicing and dicing.

Mentally rehearsed about 20 times, got on (stationary), went to unclip, nothing happened, over I go.
    I reckon about 2 seconds...

That was pretty much the only time, apart from once quite a few weeks later, I pulled up at a junction and just fell over in slow motion without really thinking about it.

Mine was after about 10 miles, but still embarrassing. I wasn't going to ride that afternoon, but thought I'd try my new pedals and check out a fishing lake at the same time. I get to the lake and notice the access and car park is gravel... looks solid enough so I continue very slowly looking for compacted sections. Then my front wheel dives into some soft stuff and the bike stops.

    TIMBEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!

Cue fishermen turning around to see who's trying their best to disturb the fishing. The noise didn't come from the bike hitting the gravel; my elbow had that pleasure so it was my "BASTAAAAARD!" that did the damage.

When I first used clipless, I think it was only when I moved onto SPD-SL I had my first fall, about 3 months down the line. I stopped at a junction and did not unclip in time and I fell to the left at the end of a 150 mile ride. I was tired and that just p1553d me off even more.

First try with SPDs. In the garage, clipped in, fell over. About 3 seconds.....

Would have helped if I'd tried it somewhere I could actually start pedalling.........

I've just bought some SPD SL's (been using SPD's before) for my nice bike.

Is there a big difference in clipping in and out?

I'm seriously tempted by the T105. How did you find it compared to the alternatives? pros/cons?

Clipping out is the same twist of the foot, clipping in requires a lot more technique as you have to get the front lip of the cleat securely in before dropping the rear down. The pedal is weighted so the clippy side faces you and pedal is vertical so the trick is to hit the pedal towards the top with the cleat and then put your weight down in one smooth motion. The 'clip' is much more positive with Spd-SLs, you'll definitely know you're in and equally you'll know if you're not.

All the above sounds complicated but after a while it'll be second nature, just be careful when you first start out to give a little pull up after you clip and before you put any power down to check. Coming from SPDs I had a few times where I thought I was in, powered away from traffic lights and promptly slid off the pedal, which was painful but not nasty thankfully.
