Hi guys, hope you can help me.

I have a specialized crosstrail comp hybrid with 700x45 tyres for communting. I currently use crud catcher mudguards, but noticed that when really wet I am getting drenched from the spray at the front.

can anyone advice me on the best mudguard to reduce or eliminate this and at a decent price.

cheers

You might be able to get away with some SKS chromoplastics guards - have a look at the sizing, I don't know offhand if they'll fit, but they're certainly cheap!
  • SKS guards are the best, IMHO.

    Something like this.
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.
  • thanks for the info, i'll have a look.

anything would be better than getting soaked.

The SKS are ok but when there's a lot of surface water it's worth adding a mud flap to the bottom; I'm regretting removing the one I had on at the weekend tonight! :(

    SKS. No others need apply.
    .
    Beep Beep Richie.
    .

FCN +7 (Hanzo Fixed. Simple - for the commute)
FCN +10 (Loud and proud PA)
  • are these compatible with disc brakes?

I actually have the SKS guards on my bike and still have the plastic bit fitted to the front one. I still find even with this the bottom of my legs do get a bit muddy with the rain and standing water on the roads like today! Just a warning!
  • Just noticed that there is no where for me to attach the mudguards on the forks. Excuse my ignorance I'm new to biking.

I knew this wasn't going to be as simple as I thought

seems to be newbie day here today?! (myself included of course!) whoop!

Anyway - I haven't bothered with mudguards. Are they really necessary? I got some cheap waterproof army trousers and don't really care if they get covered in crap. Of course, since I bought them it hasn't actually rained while i've been riding...unlike the first week of commuting when I didn't have them and it rained every single day.

    +1 on the SKS chromos.
For 45 tires you would want to get the widest fender option ( think there are 3 sizes?).

If you have no fender mount holes you can use P-clips:
    e.g.: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Unbranded-P-Clip-Rubber-Coated--Black--Per-Pair-5058.htm

And its useful getting an extra set of quick release (`safety') clips that come with the front stays, added to the rear stays.
    e.g.:
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-SKS-SKS-Secu-Clips-for-Front-Mudguard-Stays--Per-Pair-693.htm
Makes getting the rear wheel out easier especially should you have horizontal dropouts and/or a rack mounted..

If you are getting a shop to do the fitting you would want to check all this with them first I guess..

@ zrazzle - You might find out later today/this evening as it's due to 'persist' down quite heavily

I had a similar problem on my mountain bike, but I got one of these and it sorted it out a treat

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/RapidRacerProducts_NeoGuard_Standard_Neoprene_Mudguard/5360042909/

however a guy a work did a similar thing for free using some theraband.

I'm thinking of cutting up a piece of plastic for my hybrid to perform a similar task.
I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they have such great ideas

It's not just yourself, it keeps a lot of crapp of the bike and stops a lot of water getting to your shoes.

That's looks very interesting... when using the rapid racer, does it keep it completely of your face? also what about your legs?,, I'm not too fussed to be honest about my legs anyway as I wear shorts but what does annoy me is the spray on my top half.

I should point out that I also have a crud catcher too, and yes the combination of the two keeps both my face and legs dry (as long as the front wheel isn't turned too much).
