Bike Lanes ????

Just as an example, a local town - Darlington, which is supposed to be one of the 'cycle towns' - has some of the most ridiculous cycle lanes that I have ever seen.
Notwithstanding those seen on another post I've found that the cycle lanes I use in Darlington either a) stop just as the road becomes dangerous for cyclists or
b) the road surface compared to the 'main' carriage way is abominable or
c) the water run offs for the drains extend over the full width of the cycle lane and make cycling on them feel like a helter skelter.
How do your road based cycle lanes compare?
