OK Then skate shoes (with waffle sole) is your best bet. TK Maxx and JJB have them - or something like this http://www.hardcloud.com/product/vn0inq0pspk.asp0

TK Maxx... don't be picky, just buy what fits and TRY to get something with a stiffer sole.0

Seriously there is no point in spending £30 on shoes as you will end up buying Five Tens in the end.
 Five Ten Karvers are currently reduced at Stif Cycles £59.99 which makes them cheaper than Five Ten Impact two.0 -

Fail.
I bought some etnies skate shoes about a year ago specifically for riding and haven't looked back.
Stiff sole, great support... £250 -
I have no urge to buy five tens. I've got some Shimanos I bought cheap but had I not, I'd still be using my etnies. I can't even justify resoling them with stealth rubber unless I can't find skate shoes after the shimanos wear out.0

Are they any good?
I take it skate shoes and over shoes work then best?0 -
scott classic shoe is actually really good got mine for £19, stiff and grippy waffle sole, good ventilation, water resistant, warm enough with being sweaty, have lasted well- got them about 4 months ago, showing no signs of wear0
