Campagnolo Hyperon Ultra 2 - any good?

Looking at these and wondering what they're like for two and a half grand, which let's face it is getting on for Lightweight money. Could they be one of the best non-deep section wheels?

The carbon hub bodies on the Ultras worry me a little but apart from that, anyone got any Hyperons and love 'em?

Nicensleazy has a pair IIRC, may be worth a PM?

    cool, thanks .....
  • 5000 miles since the he new versions arrived No problems at all.

Bad Press is exactly what it was. Would you ride the wheels on Cavendish's bike after his fall this week?

OK fair enough, 5 grand on the replacements is good. Never saw what happened with Cav tbh.
  • Mechanic Picked Up a rim with just the spokes in it after a fairly small fall although the speed was on

  • I think they would be lovely wheels, if you can afford them! I have carried out complete overhauls of both front & rear hubs on a pair (of the previous, non 2 way fit model) without problem & a friend of mine who is quite overweight has had a pair for so me years.

I can still get a deal on the original Ultras but does anyone know the difference between the Ultra and the Ultra Two?

    Ceramic bearings?

IIRC that's the difference between the Bora Ultra one and two...

Not exactly sure about the Hyperons, but with the Boras, when Campag released the Versions One and Two, the changes from the previous just-plain-Bora were:

Two has ceramic bearings and all carbon hub bodies

One has stainless bearings and aluminium hub (Record) bodies.

The original Boras had the carbon hubs, but stainless bearings... so they went up and down to split the specs.

Would assume they did something similar with the Hyperons.

Mind you... this looks like a tempting offer, since they are offering the ceramic bearing upgrade in the deal...

To ceramic bearing upgrade is a complete pain in the rear. Unless you can do it yourself, it will cost a pretty penny. The whole wheel will need to be re-spoked. you just cannot exchange the bearing sleeve!

Oooh, didn't realise that. Might have to bribe the LBS with beer to get it done then...

I have a set and I can say that I am pretty happy with it, the performance of its inertia on the climbs are impressive, especially if you can go repetitive accelerations. I find them stiff enough to sprint on too.
