I'm upgrading the outdated gruppo on my winter trainer.
What would you go for.
Full 9 speed Tiagra, chainset brakes the lot.

or

10 speed Xenon shifters
Xenon front+rear mechs.
Veloce UT chainset, cassette and non-skeleton brakes.(skeletons are extra £35)

Campag is £10 more. I'm used to shimano and have a few shimano tools but have always wondered about campag

I have heard Veloce is good gear but what about Xenon?

I'd go for the Campag without a doubt. A bit later I would then upgrade to the newer Ultrashift type shifters and then you've got a bloody brilliant groupset.

FWIW I've had problems with Xenon - a shifter broke and a rear derailler collapsed duringa sportive. Replaced with Veloce and no problems so far. Cos of all this new bike on order has Tiagra.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

  • The LH shifter on my Tiagra broke (compact chainset). I believe it's a common problem with the old shifters related to the fact that they were designed to work with both double and triple chainsets. I had the shifter replaced under warranty for the new model that is designed solely for double chainsets. It's worked faultlessly and I'm very happy with the groupset aside from this one issue. If your getting a double, make sure it's got the new shifter.

Go0 for Veloce and avoid the Xenon and its plastics make up.
I've seen a few Xenon shifters break. They are made completely of plastic as are the rear mechs.
Veloce is a nice groupset and will last you a while
  • I find campag ergo levers much better in terms of ergonomics, plus the hidden cabling I think creates a neater front end but I suppose that is a presonal thing. The overall function/durability I think will be very similar.

Indeed I had exactly the same thing with a 105 lever set designed for double and triple, which is why I tried campag.

Got bikes with both - one with Tiagra & one with Xenon & would happily buy either again.

My only thought about Tiagra that being 'only' 9 speed, a later upgrade is likely to be a bigger purchase.
    There is no secret ingredient...
  • I would go for Campagnolo, definately. The parts are more serviceable & durable.
  • I would pay a little extra and go for full Velcoce, it's very similar to high end Campag non carbon 10 speed groupsets of a couple of years ago.

I voted the Campag even though i use Shimano as the 10 speed groupset is more upgradeable to higher level kit as and when you feel the need.
