Cycling shorts and modesty

Okay, I'm no prude, and I have no "envy" issues but my shorts don't do a lot to hide my junk. The pro riders I see seem to have, for lack of a better way to put it, 'modesty" padding at the front which creates a tidy, non meat and two veg effect which would no doubt make work colleagues subjected to me in lycra a little more comfortable.

Is it just the cut of the best stuff, or is it something to do with the amount of panels etc?

I don't see brands advertised as "your penis will not be on display in these really comfy shorts!!" and the higher brands are out of my price range. I know that I could go for baggies but don't see why I should.

Any suggestions on a brand that will protect my modesty and not go north of 50 quid?

the simplest way i find is to take a pair of lighweight shorts, just put them on when increased modesty is required

not the most stylish look, but it works

Proper cycling shorts will have chamois, some are bigger than others, and may hide more. Do you currently have cycling shorts with a chamois in.

Argh. I try not to notice stuff like that, but when you're at a cafe stop sitting amongst other customers enjoying their sunday afternoon tea, it's difficult not to feel embarrassed by your mate standing at the counter with a pair of shorts with a chamois that does nothing to break up the contours of the male genitalia.

I think Lusso shorts have a good pad and are quite cheap but I hate the styling. Giordana Tenax are the business but £65 at ribble.

I had thought of the lightweight shorts but it is a faff. I do have a chamois, it's a coolmax one and doesn't extend far forward at all. They are Aldi specials and the pad is comfortable but perhaps because they were cheaper thats why they don't cover anything?

Lusso have a larger than average insert, but I find it buches up a bit and is uncomforatble on longer rides, so just acquired another pair of Giordana Tenax bibs :) Much better IMO, the gel insert is a lot better quality and therefor less mass for the same effect (but they are more money to, you sometimes do get a bit better if you pay more, but not always) and will hide the average tackle from view  And if it doesn`t you`ll probably be a lot more popular at the next office Xmas party

You pay for what you get - £6 Aldi shorts prove that if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
Having worn those, I can attest that they have no support and look like a dump filled nappy at the back.
  • I just wear speedos!

I had to laugh last night when a mate and his girlfriend came round to visit, I paused the Paris - Nice race I had recorded, in fits of laughter my wife and my mates girl looked at the screen to see the "MEAT" proudly dispalyed as the winner shot across the line! Penis envy?........You bet!

Not that I mind people seeing my junk (they shouldn't be staring anyway), but all I can advise is that the bibs I own do hide the - ahem - contours. They are Sportful 'Tour' and Giordana 'Tenax'.

I only get this problem with my lidl tights, great for commutes but the front padding is crap.

With my decent bibs, however, the big fella is squashed into submission.

    Enjoy the freedom.

  • The Lidl shorts are a bit pants - pun intended. My best pair of shorts for comfort are Ron Hill ones bought from JJB for the very affordable sum of £17.99. For modesty? Hmm. Not sure that anybody considers this when designing. The pro riders who aren't showing the goods may be poorly endowed due to extensive drug use I suppose.

To save my problems I rarely wear just Lycra. It only encourages the ladies. I either wear tights on top, unpadded or a pair of shorts. Its the MTB look.

If you want a laugh, buy a pair of bib shorts and parade into the bedroom in just them. If your other half gets horny because of them - worry.

I often catch the train out to do some riding to avoid inner city London - I feel a little self-conscious about standing there with my wares on display as it were (I'm sure that not everyone wants to see the contents of my lycra!). My solution is the light short one - football shorts are a pretty good bet. Light, pack down and a bit more "sensitive" to those who may be offended/shocked/excited/repulsed etc!

Well I reckon I see enough women showing it all for everyone to see, why not us blokes as well. :D

I just wear long shorts or chonglers if you ever played Gran Theft Auto San Andreas, I'm not slim enough for lycra yet, 2 stone to go first. :D

Another benefit of decent front coverage from the insert is more chill protection for the old chap on a long ride on a cold day!

I have endura fs260, giordana tenax, nike something and gore something else, which all do that job well :) They're all good as shorts but the fabric's a bit weak and splitting on the nike and gore ones - endura and giordana ones seem better made out of tougher stuff.

Get a length of hose pipe, attach one end to your "old fella" and wrap the rest around one thigh at roughly equal intervals, sit back and wait for the admiring glances

Seriously though I'm wearing Altura £20 shorts and apart from the size being a little on the snug side, they're hiding my package reasonably well. I found a £16 pair of Endura shorts to do the job a little better but after a while the seams started to separate just above the chamois. Fortunately I had some longs with me
If you buy it, they will come...

...up to you and say, you didn't want to buy one of them!!!

I usually just colour it in with a black water soluble marker pen and let it hang over the top under my jersey, job done.

just ride in them and get a clip board on the handle bars with a copy of mayfair on said clip board and park outside the local ann summers shop that should do the trick :)

Dosn't half smart if you get it caught in the chain ring though. Zips flies are just not in the same league

LIDL I are doing cycling gear next monday including some padded undies http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl ... x_8879.htm
I use theirs and ALDI ordinary style padded ones under padded lycra shorts and never have a problem.

    Not very modest
  • The one 2nd from right looks like a lady till you arrive below waist! Thats some over testosterone use. The rest of them seem to have divided a set of snooker balls between them!

Who needs to be modest? All men have one, and most women have seen one

If anyone complains tell 'em not to look!
  • I have encountered this problem (is it a problem?!) when I drop my youngest son of at nursery before I cycle into work. I felt a bit self conscious talking to the other parents/children with my tackle looking like it had been spray painted with glossy black paint. I then encountered a similar problem at work when I would sometimes bump into a client with said visible tackle. The only shorts I have found that provide modesty are Endura. Must be the way they are cut. Assos seem particularly bad for this...although very comfortable.

So, I bought a pair of Rapha touring shorts - designed to go over bibs. They are v comfortable. But they are Rapha and are a ridiculous price for what they are - £70.

I would never dream of wearing them on a club run, where it would just be 'wrong'. But on public transport, nursery, etc. they're great.

Those Rapha shorts look smart but too pricey. I think I'll look at some of the bibs suggested to see if they are a little more discrete. If all else fails on the odd occasion where it may be an issue I'll look at some baggies instead.

I suppose the whole baggies on a roadie look is a little courier chic anyways so may go for that for the commute. Normally I'd not be bothered as when out riding proper I couldn't give a stuff about my stuff! However, there is a charity 50 coming up where most of the same people will be coming along, no doubt on their BSO's and they have no real understanding of cyclists. I've promised to stay with everyone and do it as a team but there is no way I'm doing a fifty wearing anything but bibs. I'm delicate you see.

The thing I can't work out is I've been wearing full length tights all winter and no-one has batted an eyelid. 1st nice day and I go in wearing shorts and a cycling jersey and you'd think I'd run in swinging the old boy about! I guess the Endura Gridlock Jacket that I usually wear is just long enough to cast a welcome shadow.

The first time I see a nipple on a cold day I may have to retaliate and risk a visit from HR!
  • I bought some of the cheapish decathlon bib shorts and they are quite well padded on the front. As are some of the nalini ones I got in the sale from PBK
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

I used to have this problem of my tackle being just a little bit visble. I solved it by shoving a cucumber down the front of my shorts.
