Bike Buying Advice Please

I am looking to buy a bike that will cover 16 miles commuting a day (with panniers), do the occasional sportive (dare I say leisurely) turn up for gentle runs at local bike club, but will also carry me for many, many touring miles in comfort.
OK, so I know that perhaps I should go out and buy three bikes, but I would be very grateful if anyone has a Trek Portland, and whether they would recommend them. I will be trading up from a 24 year old Raleigh Wisp (albeit one that I've up-graded over the years). It did everything I needed, and there just doesn't seem to be anything like it out there.
Apologies if this has already been covered recently.
Thanks,
Tusher

Asked a similar question a while ago, you'll get more response in the commuter section but many people recommended the Tifoski CK7 as a great all rounder, do like the look of the Classic.0
