I do now and again. Only in social occasions though. Which is rare.

It is becoming less and less socially acceptable nowadays.

However, each to their own. If you want to smoke and pay for them legally then go ahead and do it in the right places :)

Yes I smoke but not when I'm on the bke - I figure that the more I cycle the less I smoke. Though as I've only done 200 miles over the last 4 weeks, I've averaged fewer miles than fags. Bad boy

I've never run out of lung-power though, it's always the legs that beg for mercy first. Maybe it's the circulation....

It's murder being a smoking cyclist. When I was racing I used to find an out of the way place in the car park to leave the car, with a flask of tea and a cigarette waiting for me when I finished, which I regarded as a well earned little pleasure. You could bet your bottom dollar that within minutes of sparking up at least a dozen people would have appeared from nowhere, all with a comment along the lines of, "You won't go very fast if you..." etc etc.

    Feck off

Stopped 23 years ago when daughter born.

Used to do half marathons and cross country running and like Cathald always had a fag at beginning to get me through and at the end as congratulations. I don't think it did me any harm  .

Now good lung capacity, low heart rate for age, ditto blood pressure and lots more money to spend on biking things and I don't give the Government anything.

The odd cigar - we are talking less than 10 a year. Do enjoy them though.

I tried smoking cigs when I was younger but never really took to it (unless drunk).

VERY long time ago, I was an actor in a film which required me to "race" and win a one day 200 km road race. The cast and crew travelled up to the start town the night before, went out on the tiles big time...
Turned up at the start line next morning, major hangover, all decked out in pro gear, pro level bike, with my OWN CAMERA CREW filming... and two coffees and three cigarettes later, rolled over the start line with a whole lot of people wondering just who the f*ck I was..:lol:

Rode 100 metres out of camera shot, pulled over before throwing up. Another fag, into the van. Drove 200 km to the finish line where a few thousand people were lined up to watch. Make Up department spent half an hour making me look like I'd just ridden 200km, then I went up the road out of shot, turned and sprinted back over the hill, crossed the line like the winner... stopped 50 metres later for a fag and a beer to celebrate the finish of the film shoot.. crowd VERY confused because the rest of the field were 20 minutes later...

    Hilarious fun!!

Quit smoking long time ago btw...

Perhaps they just didn't think the start line of a charity ride was necessarily an appropriate place to have a fag and that you were being a bit of an idiot?

Could you not have had one somewhere else before you joined the line-up, instead of waiting until you were sitting in a crowd of people who are unlikely to have appreciated breathing in your second hand smoke before setting off?

I smoke a pipe, but only in the summer(and not on the bike my dexterity in the saddle doesn't stretch to packing a pipe (ooer) and lighting it whilst pedalling).

I usually say this, but nobody ever responds. Pity really, because it's a good joke.

So I'll give you a

Are these the same people who will be spending the next 100 miles breathing in car exhaust fumes, then? :)

Can't say I've ever seen someone wrap their lips around a car exhaust and take a big breath in.

I don't suppose any of the guys on cathalds charity ride wrapped their lips round his cigarette before the start either.

Yes they are, but there's no equivalence between the two situations.

He didn't feel it necessary to have a p*** on the start line because other people would have found it unpleasant. He did decide to have a fag, which from his description some people seemed to have found unpleasant, and understandably so. So why do it?

I can't speak about the health risks, concentrations of toxins in the air, etc; but I do know that I've never thought "what's that disgusting smell" when a smoky vehicle goes past, but I usually do when someone's smoking in a car that passes me.

At least knowing that you're a smoker helps to put your attitude to helmets in perspective, SJ

I tried to start a few times while in my late teens early twenties but could never seem to get addicted.

So - no, never, though do years of passive smoking with two wives who both smoked heavily count?

Perhaps it was not the best place but it was in the open air and until they ban smoking in the street I will continue to smoke there unless I give up (which I hope to do)
to be honest it was the idea of a cyclist smoking that made them look at me

BTW I hope you weren't calling me an idiot
