Beginners off to the Alps

Wondering what/where people would advise for a trip to the Alps for my and my boyfriend. We are quite new to MTB, both having taken it up last year and only really done forest-riding around Epping Forest, nothing technical.

We will be getting there by train, and are actually starting the holiday off with some road-cycling near Dijon/Macon (argh!), with my more-fit-than-me father, who does this annually. So, apart from the obvious different tyres, what else would you advise re. equipment to take? We both just have hardtails, and the only equipment we have are basic cycle helmets (not full face), lightly padded gloves, and padded shorts. Do we need more than this is we are only going to be doing the easier trails? I would really like to learn more about how to do MTB 'properly' so would also be interested in lessons if these were available or if you guys recommend them.

Ta!

  • I would consider some more technical riding in the uk first. Lake district, scotland etc Plenty of instructed courses run in the uk.See link below

Personally wouldnt advise unguided alpine style riding if you are as inexperienced and equipped as your post hints

I dont mean to sound harsh but at the end of the day you want to get as much enjoyment as you can, if you are ill equipped and inexperienced you may not enjoy it as much as you could.

Hope you have a good time whatever you decide.

    Brake Pads. They're quite useful.

Spend some time on some welsh trails. (i like wales) Red Welsh Routes are similar to Alpine Cross Country routes.

Don't consider Black or Downhill trails in the UK....not yet, at least.

if you go out there take advice on the technicality of the trails before you head down them as some will just be a long walk down.
