White wheels?

Hi folks
Have been toying with the idea of upgrading the wheels on my Madone 4.5 (they're currently Bontrager Race) for something a little lighter, but I'm struggling to find many reasonably priced wheels that you can get for around the £250-400 mark. Any suggestions? I need them to be relatively strong (as the roads around me aren't in great nick). Any suggestions?

You can get those halo rims to build up too with white spokes and whatever hubs you want.
DT swiss do white rims too.

Should come in under £400 unless you go crazy on the hubs.
Let us know how you get on. I'm planning white wheels too for a steel framed project.0 -
Thanks for the replies guys - some food for thought there!0

I think to make it actually worthwhile to change your wheels.. i.e the current ones are not damaged and you do want to shave off some significant weight, I thinkj your budget is a little on the low side.
If you just want a cosmetic change then fair enough, but lighter wheels seem to start at 700 plus realistically.
It is just that I am going thru same process of a set of lighter wheels for competition.0 -

I got some Halo Mercury for my 2009 Trek 1.5, put on some lime green Michelin Pro Race 3...............and I love em. Far better than the Bontrager SSR's that came with the bike, much lighter and swifter especially up hill. Would recommend.0

The American Classics are very nice 'in the flesh' and the freewheel seems fairly quiet, not bad weight either0

I have a pair of white Halo Mercurys.
Light - 1550g approx
Sturdy - I'm near 100kg
Great Value - under £250pr
They feel nice & stiff when accelerating too.
I'd post some pics but whenever I post from Photobucket into this forum the pictures are very small fo some reason..Ribble Gran Fondo

Trek 8000
Sirrus framed 'special'
Prev: Avanti Corsa, Routens, MBK TT, homemade TT bike, Trek 990, Vitus 979 x 2, Peugeot Roubaix & er..Raleigh Arena!0 -

I'd really like to see that, thanks0 -
I have white mercurys on my madone 5.5.. They are lighter and faster and they havent fallen to bits like the bontrager race lite ones that came with the bike..
I matched them up with white bar tape and a white charge saddle...0 -

The white tyres for me are a bit of an overkill!
I run DT Swiss Mon Chasseral and they are a ,lovely wheelset if budget allows.0 -
I think that bike looks awesome! Although with my lack of enthusiasm for bike cleaning I don't think it would stay white for very long if it was mine...0

A question re halo wheels for those that own them...
Are the logos stickers that you think would peel off?0 -

Glad you mentioned..... ordered mine yesterday...
I have the 1900s as standard fitment and impressed with them as well for day to day training use.
yes white rims white tyres - a bit 'ghosty' for my taste0 -
the granfondo pictures with white tyres & wheels isn't my cup of tea.... looks like a American low rider with whitewall tyres....
I prefer classic (read traditional) lines i'm afraid....
sorry0 -

Right cool I can live with that fo sho.
I got a nos columbus steel frame today. Gonna strip it bare, clearcoat it, some of these wheels and brown leather bobs. Should look pretty sweet. It does in my head anyway.
Just wish those wheels had white spokes. Looked into building up with them but it's way too expensive that way.
Your bike looks sweet btw, the new wheels look lots better with the subtle graphics.
Oh, where did you get the wheels anyhow?0 -

I came across these from the weight weenies forum. Have sold lots to people on there and I cant find a bad word said about them.
Essentially the 26mm rims are $470 (£310) delivered and weigh in at 1330g verified. You can have the 31mm more aero rim for the same price but with a 60g per pair penalty.
I'm very tempted, but am waiting for them to get back to me as the guy is at some bike show. Only thing is that they're in Singapore which adds the wait and risk, although from what I've read there is nothing to worry about.
Those Halo's are tempting, but at over 1625g I think I'd rather splash an extra £100 and risk the Souls (and get skewers!).
I'd be upgrading from Aksiums on my Spesh Tarmac.
Be interested to see how you get on.0 -
I had been looking at the Halo's for a while and not made the jump.
Apart from the obvious "pimp" benefit of the white wheels will I see a performance benefit from from RS20's? Stupidly the lower wheel cost has out me off thinking I'd need to move towards £300 to notice a difference.
