Shimano STI lever ??
I use Shimano Ultegra Sti levers but the rear lever has a little play in it which rattles whenever i go over rough or bumpy roads, a neighbour said it would be worth replacing the rear brake cable & the outer casing as the outer casing becomes clogged up over time and this causes the inner cable to become sluggish ? is he correct?

Probably, unless the return spring has gone really wek. The mech spring should also help to pull the cable back tight. Worth taking the cables off and cleaing through, if it were me, for the hassle involved in taking `em off, I`d just bin `em and replace with new ones. It shouldn`t break the bank
