Starting now on ES1. It's now or never for the GC riders, with a steep uphill finish today and a flat stage tomorrow.

20% kick up to the line. Who needs Montelupone?

Boonen, Lovkvist, Maaskant in the doomed break... and Ignatiev!

    That's a classy break!

There are loads of others too, but I can't be bothered to work out who they are. A classy doomed break is still a doomed break.

Maybe it's not doomed after all! 1.35 @ 13 km to go. Lovkvist, Spilak, Maaskant, Ignatiev, Velits and someone from Astana.

I've been reading this thinking "they might not be doomed, given the horsepower in the chase behind'. We'll see. If the GC contenders start racing they might get caught, if they play it cagey then the break might succeed.

Guess who's gone solo off the front of the breakaway? Such a surprise.

56 seconds with 3.5 kms to go. I'd be surprised if the peleton brings them back.

Garzelli's 2 seconds back on GC now, and Iglinsky is up to 4th.

EBH was in the bus yesterday, keeping powder dry for next month/this weekend?
