I have a dilemma on hands....
I thought I'd made my mind up which new FS trail bike to get (Trek Fuel EX8 2010) but now people I speak to think there's better in the market for my price range...?
An views...I've listed below:-
Trek Fuel EX8...
Giant Trance 2...
Orange Five Pro...
Giant Anthem X2...
Could I really go wrong with any of the above?
My friends say if you want a bullet proof bike which is adaptable and pretty much copes with anything you throw at it, Orange Five is the best?

But they're all good choices, though the Anthem is a bit more lightweight than the others. Check out MBR (sorry ) for a review of £2-£2.5k trail bikes. The Fuel Ex 8 was very highly rated. It didn't win though.....0 -
Ghost AMR 7500* marching on British Market. Think it will be the next Cube, or even better Lapierres (woops).
All depends on your local trails. Wouldn't want to pedal heavy bike on long day out. But then people ride different distances. What could have been (Video)
I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though0 -
Hi,
I'm in a simaler predicament. Tested a Trek and really liked it, but tried an Orange ST4 yesterday and preferred it to the Five. Slightly more x country leaning, but still totally planted on the down hills.
My only worry with the trek is is it a bit flimsy? The tubing feels very thin. That said it is pretty light.
Tried a Stumpjumper Comp and wasn't too impressed- lots of bob on hard pedalling. Think I need to try the anthem as everyone raves about them.

I have a Trek Fuel EX Carbon which i got for £2k last year (reduced stock) and it is perfect for trail riding. No worries about flimsy tubing there, im 16stone and it takes all the abuse i give it!
Out of all those i'd choose the Trek, not because i'm biased but because they are the best looking bike too in my opinion.
Failing that, go for last years model, it is very similer specced and you should save a good 500 quid on this years to spend on upgrades.Don't do 6ft drops on a carbon full suss trail bike, it doesn't work. Ask my fractured Great Trochanter, he will tell you.0 -

Stumpy FSR Expert is definitely worth a test if you can get one from LBS...No bob with the brain active but its at the top end of your budget at £2500
Are you happy with the 120mm travel of the Trek? (2010 Stumpy is 140mm)2010 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon

But this is not a sensor... it is a Force with more travel.0

i have the 2009 Trek fuel EX9, it's a really nice bike. it is solid, takes everything i can throw at it.
it is a difficult choice, i am trying to pick a new HT frame at the moment, and no matter how many opinions you hear about this and that, it;s still not easy to finally decide.
what does you gut instinct tell you? forget about how it compares in the trail centre car park, how is it for you on the trail, will it take YOU up to the next level of skill, performance and enjoyment.
i am coming to the conclusion that the differences between manufacturers 5mm here 1 degree there are so small that I am not good enough to tell the difference between a 69.5 and 71 degree HTA.... so I am starting to look at things like build quality, reputation and warranty (and will the company be around in 5 years), innovation also plays some part in how they stick 7 tubes together.0 -
Yes I'm a fanboy but I'd go Giant Trance X2.
Can't see past the Maestro system for pedalling efficiency, it feels like you're being winched up the hill. If you can stretch to £2650 you get an amazing spec for the money on an X1.
Anthem X also brilliant but has an inch less travel at eiher end.Giant Trance X 2010

You've missed the commencal meta 5. I have one and it's a brilliant bike, both up and down. It got great reviews last year too and you should get a pretty good spec for that sort of money.0

Zesty would definitely be on my shortlist for a test ride - see how we're helping you narrow down your choices here?
Nice dilemna to have though!0 -

oh dear, i seem to have flooded the floor with drool......
that is nicer and (probably) better than anything else at that price.... great value...and KILLER looks.... i know where my money would be.... certainly not that overweight, under speced, over priced, under engineered piece of crud the 5I like bikes and stuff0 -
One bike that allways gets overlooked is the Marin Mount Vision 5.8....there are amazing trail centre machines and can be picked up for £2,199...great spec and not a bad looker...great warranty and lifetime bearings...slightly biased as I own one...and with being crowned bike of the year and trail bike of the year in 2007 and 2008 that is statement enough0

go for a genius in my opinion, the way the angles change via t.c, its an awesome design.67.4 degrees at head angle. that's for steep stuff - obviously but its a better angle than most and you can feel it.
go for alu though, if you ride hardAlways look as far as you can.
Tricked out Orange hardtail 100mm tavel0 -
My choice would be a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert : £2.5k with £250 cash back to spend on any other Specialized products. (Spring Reward)Specialized Enduro SL Pro Carbon
Specialized Stumpy Evo Carbon
Canyon Aeroad Disc Di2
Specialized FSRxc - XC Race Bike0 -

Agreed, Also, if you ask at your LBS nicely, they'll probably change the 10% in free accessories to 10% off the bike2010 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon

All good bikes. In your position, I'd wait and see what Saracen come up with, the Ariel's almost out, that could be very cool if they get it right (ie, rip off the right bikes )
The Five's a great option, it can turn its hand to everything and they're better value now than they've been for ages with so many prices going up. The Anthem's stupidly brilliant but a wee bit more limited in focus, I'm always amazed by what they can do but at the same time, I'd not want to ride one down innerleithen TBH, there's not a lot of actual bad bikes at this price.Uncompromising extremist0 -
im not keen on treks, ride a mates ex9 now and then and its just dull and mushy and just not very exciting.
never had a go on a orange 5 but if aids could be seen by the human eye the 5 is prob what it would look like.
2010 spesh stumpy suspesion is way better than the 08-09 models and i like them.
mates just bought a 2010 zesty 514, very nice looking bike and rides ok but they are very cramped, im 6" and usually fit a large but not on a lapierre, i cant steer and pedal because my knees whack the bars defo need a size larger than you usually ride or fit a layback and longer stem. also anyone over 200lb usually rips the shittly pressed fit bb out the frame.
had a go on a marin mount vision, very nice bike with very active suspension but quite mushy when hammerd so propedal is a must and not really a light weight.
not had a go on a gt force but looks awesome and thats prob where my money would be as ive had a few gt's and they always deliver.0
