My girlfriend wants my old PC, the only problem is when ever I turn it on now the fan starts going nuts, and it maxing out even when the PC is not doing anything.
I've formatted it, so its not running stuff that I don't know about.
To fix it I want to get a new silent fan, any suggestions?
Its a HP Pavilion and it runs an AMD 64 3200+

Either take the fan out and service it. Or take the fan out and get it's details so you know what to buy (size / volts / dB). I'd service it first and see how it runs.0

How do I service a fan?
Could it be that the thermostat is borked?<hr noshade size="1"><font color="purple"><center><i><b><font size="2"><font face="Times New Roman"> "Boggis and Bunce and Bean. And it would help to know what fan you're on about.0

so it's a cpu fan.
take the fan off and clean it, make sure bearings work ok etc. if they don't it's new fan time. take details down while you're there.0 -
Take the case off, give the insides a good clean. Dust trapped in the case vents and heatsink quite often leads to fan 'racing'.
When you take the fan and heatsink off, get rid of the old thermal compound and get some arctic silver thermal compound and apply that before remounting the heatsink/fan
As above, if the fan is goosed, get a new one, can pick them up pretty cheaply.whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons0 -
I have found that filling the inside of the case with expanding foam stops rattles and noises. Just drill a small hole under the floppy drive, put the nozzle in and squirt till the noise stops and you can smell burning silicon.
This also works for deadening rattles in car doors, but finding the floppy drive on 'em can be a bit of a ballache.SOLD!0 -
download real temp http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
and run that, see what temps it gives when the fan is making the noise,
is it definitely the CPU fan?
have you tried disconnecting all the other fans? GFX card/ case etc?0 -
If it's just the standard fan then it will spin fast most of the time as the tend to be a bit on the small side (70-80mm) and need to spin faster to shift more air and keep things cool, if you get an new fan try and get a bigger after market fan (if it will fit), it may be non removable and you may need a new heatsink/fan, i'm running a Nero Akasa w/120mm fan and its damn near silent.0

Its probably just full of dust/fluff. Get a can of compressed air (http://www.longs.co.uk/acatalog/Longs_Shopping_Site_Air_dusters_36.html#aHT5803002) and give it a blow out. if not look on dabs for a new oneBikes are OK, I guess... :-)

I think its just the CPU fan, I dusted the case out a while ago to no avail, even if I run it with the sides off it makes no difference.
I'll give the fan and heat sink a good load of compressed are and clean it all. if that doesn't work, I'll get a liquid nitrogen cooling system.<hr noshade size="1"><font color="purple"><center><i><b><font size="2"><font face="Times New Roman"> "Boggis and Bunce and Bean. thats serious overkill there

that would do just fine for an old pc, provided you have a PWM socket on the mobo (3 pins instead of 2) then it'll be nice and quiet.
comes with thermal compound applied already too0 -

As the saying goes : you don't need to know how things work, just to know where to hit them if they go wrong!Bikes are OK, I guess... :-)
