Hi,

I know that these ''buying dilemna'' questions seem to come back quite often. I am riding a 2009 Cervelo RS (with the stock wheelset-Shimano RS20). I am looking to upgrade my wheelset.

My budget is around 900£. I am mainly interested in the Shimano Dura-Ace WH-7850 C-24 and the Easton EC-90 SL, both clincher models. I am not racing (and not planning to do so any time soon). Basically, I want a great all-round every day wheelset. Any thoughts on this issue? Recommendations?

The Eastons look very good, and my experience with their EA90 wheels has been very positive. But I think you would need to increase your budget by 50% in order to afford them - unless you have found them cheap (in which case please let me know where!)

The shimano's are £499 a pair at Planet X at the moment, which may help your decision...

But they haven't got any in stock and Planet X have...
  • Hi,

Grahamcp, I live in Canada, so I think that the prices here are a little different than in UK. Both wheelsets are approximatly the same price on ebay. However, I might have a surprise after custom/duty taxes (I hope for the best!!!).
  • Hi all,

I have a question for the experienced riders here: when you see a novice rider (such as myself) with high-end wheels, such as the easton ec90 sl, do you think to yourself ''what a wannabee'' LOL ? I want a wheel that I can grow with over the next 2-3 years so I thought that instead of buying an OK wheel I would rather buy something really good right now. But at the same time I don't want to look like an idiot.

It's somewhat a superficial question but still I wonder.

    Thanks for your feedback.

i reckon if you want it and you can afford it - go for it.

you will only look like an idiot to those who are jealous - and what do you care about what others think anyway? it's all about you and you enjoying your cycling with your friends.
    regards,

If it makes you happy then go for it. However, I don't know anyone that has 900pound "everyday" wheels as the worry of damaging them in everyday use is too great. Plus, wheels wear, and lightweight wheels are often lightweight because the rims and thinner etc, meaning they won't last as long.

Don't think jealousy has anything to do with it. More a practical decision for yourself.

No-one will notice what wheels you have got or really care. Get some cheaper ones ,then it doesn't hurt your wallet if they are eaten by potholes.
