Yes it really can be done. My Brother inlaw and his fiancee are planning to climb Mt Everest in 2011 in aid of Unicef. If you go to www.patchexpedition.com you can upload a photo of you and your bike and get it on the largest flag to be taken to the summit.. Now there's bragging rights for you, "Yeah I have a picture of me and my bike on the summit of Mt Everest!" 8)

As did I...
I'd rather ride a bike up the Galibier and down again...0 -
fair points. but it's still a cool thing to do, and you will be helping Unicef save thousands of lives. just thought it was a good place to post all those pictures everybody takes of their bikes.0

I can't remember his name, but a few years back a Swedish guy cycled from Stockholm to Everest, climbed the mountain solo, then cycled back.
But he didn't carry his bike up, the wimp.0 -
My brother and I planned to cycle/push our bikes up Mt Fuji and then whizz down the scree slopes at some insane speed... unfortuantely the 100 mile ride from where we lived at the time to the base of the mountain shagged me out (I took too much luggage in my panniers). Spent a fortune sending the panniers home the next day, before riding home again (taile between legs) - never made it up Fuji on the bike though...
...has anyone out there managed to take a bike up a decent sized mountain and lived to tell the tale?0 -

Goran kropp. Not sure about the spelling. Sadly, no longer with us! Hazard of the territory (mountaineering)
I seem to recall a couple of guys mtb ing up Killi back in my Blue Peter watching days. But yes, I thought the thread implied somebody was lugging a bike up Everest. Now that could be a challenge.0 -
It was the Crane brothers riding up Mt Kilimanjaro in 1984/5.0

I've cycled to base camp on the Tibet side (5200m).
Does that count?Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -

I'm seriously impressed... I went there years ago and tried to just walk from the Rombok monastry to 'base camp' (not the tented one - the one with the memorials to all the dead climbers). I failed miserably due to the altitude - a jeep offered me a lift and I happily accepted  .
I did see a few touring cyclists in Tibet and could only marvel at them - I'd love to do it one day.0 -
that's all very nice and that , but has anybody actually visited the website? What they are trying to achieve really is truly remarkable.Only an observation, but everyone seems to be more interested in talking about what they used to watch on telly :?0
