COMMERCIALISED RIP OFF.

Although my mum has now died my siblings and I never needed a special day to give her flowers, take her out or give her a treat.

Having said that we all used to get her a card and gift on mothers day, thus allowing ourselves to be exploited by the marketeers. :x

I'm under strict instructions not to buy anything for Mothering Sunday. Except a card of course.

Mothers day (i.e. wife's day) here will be tomorrow, since I need to be up at around 0600 on Sunday to get to the start of the Jodrell Bank Sportive on time. Oh dear.

    COMMERCIALISED RIP OFF.

Much like birthdays, Easter, Christmas etc etc. I don't know many Christians really but everyone i know celebrates these days :?

I'd prefer to do away with the lot of it, but then i'm a bitter individual...

    I'd echo those sentiments.

Instead of buying a card, this year i will make one, and instead of the usuall flowers, i'll make dinner mow the lawn or something.

Seems all we do is keep card companies in business these days! I'd extend the mother's day commercialisation to father's day, valentine's day, easter, halloween, bonfire night, and of course christmas. Surely if we're half decent people we'd constantly be showing appreciation anyway...

And as such i will be spending mother's day racing at Soggy Bottom's round 4 :-)

Well, I'm a mum and this sounds fab to me and costs almost nowt and no marketing pandering involved.

My mum has a nice card that I bought & posted on time, my Dad will get her some simple spring flowers on my behalf.

I am getting breakfast in bed and cuppa tea cooked by my littleies - I am stuck somewhere between anticipation & dread on that one but my 9 yr old boy has been inspired & confidence-boosted by his Cubs pack, so who I am I to put that fire out?

I am also a proper Christian and we love xmas and gifts and nice pressies and trees and sparkly stuff, and we like that people who dont closely identify with religion still closely identify with all the other positive things about christmas: family, togetherness, a few days R&R, peace & goodwill etc. People have been celebratring at that time of year since caveman times, christians just took over an existing date that's all.

My message to you all is - stop finding excusues not to celebrate. If you dont want to celebrate, acknowlege that but dont blame marketing - vote with your feet & dont spend - just put some thought & effort into the free stuff instead.

I also dont like the marketing stuff but would be upset if I was an uncelebrated mum.

It's commercialised guff, but falling into line buys me the brownie points I need to go out riding. :)
